Description

Following the Previous White Hybrid build ;

https://pcpartpicker.com/user/orbitalwalsh/builds/#view=mgVYcf

I went on ahead and made a Black & Blue version using Gigabytes Twin Turbo card. This build was fulled watercooled with thanks to Alphacool for sponsoring the build !!

enjoy

*thanks for the feature :D

If your interested in having a build like this of the white version made with blower style cards, please drop me a message. or if your interested in the one above :)

Hoping to hybrid cool AMDs RX480 reference design next with the Help of Alphacools GPX-Pro blocks :)

**YouTube Videos!!!

Was a MoFo to Hybrid cool! reason why?

simple, its built well! a lot better then Asus's Turbo version in the heatsink and casing but let down...!

For a start the alumin Block with copper center actually makes contact with the RAM! Asus doesn't. Because the Heaksink is a better design with Heatpipes, the Shroud casing fits directly onto the heatsink were as the Asus version was to the board itself which was far easier for me to mod. The fan is aweful though! like a drone! and its the let down! doesnt count for this build but god aweful above 30%!!!!!!

overclocks like a beast on water! hitting 1500hz! and 7800hz on the ram... NO Voltage increase so far :D

Hitting 25k on Firestrike just based on graphics score with the two of them

How'd you do the gpu's?

orbitalwalsh
  • 8 years 9 months ago

:)

Using Alphacool GPX blocks . in this case it was the GTX 970 M03 version.

Its cut down to fit within the shroud, fixed to the board then the shroud is bolted to the heatsink.

This wasnt as straight forward as Asus's version as the shroud mounted straight to the board which was a lot easier.

can push the card to 1500hz but the back plate and burn on touch and water hit 50c- mainly due to non high static fans being used up front. currently a 1414hz @ 40c under 4 hour full load

It's beautiful, personally i prefer red and black or white, but the blue and black looks amazing. Out of interest, where'd you get those pipes and the reservoir/ pump?

orbitalwalsh
  • 8 years 9 months ago

All via Alphacool or aquatuning shop :)

Tubing is Tygon :D

cooler was purely based on the GPU, like the white build was based on ASUS's version of the card :D

LaputaCake
  • 8 years 9 months ago

How do the 970s perform, could probably get an answer elsewhere but you've just done it and I have a 970 and was wondering how they are now in SLI?

orbitalwalsh
  • 8 years 9 months ago

Great in benches and main games like COD and BF but starting to lose favour with most game engines. Hopefully VR SLi will lift the profile of multi card setups . Wait till 1060 and price will drop more ! But so will still stock

LaputaCake
  • 8 years 9 months ago

I was probably going to second hand anyway. That was my concern making the 1070 more appealing but at a much greater cost. I suppose it would be best to hang on to my 970 till 1070 drops or it dies and EVGA are very generous with their RMAs xD

orbitalwalsh
  • 8 years 9 months ago

price might settle down but dont think it will drop low, theres nothing from AMD till end of the year maybe. Good OC should see your card hit 980 levels

LaputaCake
  • 8 years 9 months ago

Yea, it's a FTW+ so it's already pretty fast.

orbitalwalsh
  • 8 years 9 months ago

whats games do you play or intend to play in the up coming year?

worth seeing if they can run SLi .

DX12 will get better low end support now for multi-GPU as a lazy option for Developers and AMD/Nvidia

i hope u know about the rx 480 issue.

orbitalwalsh
  • 8 years 9 months ago

yeah, bit of driver update and a water block should sort it out! undervolt and clock it up. 3rd parties should be more suited but only problem is they are more costly

tru. I wish I could build a better PC.........

Berfs1
  • 8 years 9 months ago

Dude I have been trying to upgrade my "old" custom build, and I cannot because everything just HAS to be out of my budget. What the hell is wrong with this business...... (not PCPP)

orbitalwalsh
  • 8 years 9 months ago

UK has screwed it's self over. Pound has dropped so much. 1080s are going for £700!!! Every part is at least £10 more expensive now which all adds up:(

1060 should drop prices down and level the GPU market hopefully

wallywin1972

Great build, love the color scheme, how do you like that SSD? Quick huh! ;)

JacobGunther12
  • 8 years 9 months ago

Why are you SLI'ing 2 GTX 970s when you could get a GTX 1080? Just a thought...

orbitalwalsh
  • 8 years 9 months ago

Bought before their release, around March but took a while. Was in contact the whole time with gigabyte . could of been at comutex if if got it done on time :( I'll be doing the same with 1070/80s and RX480s :)

JacobGunther12
  • 8 years 9 months ago

Ok.

Berfs1
  • 8 years 9 months ago

the SLI of GTX 970s looks pretty cool (no pun intended). I would go with the 970s if they were cheaper than the 1080 as well.

JacobGunther12
  • 8 years 9 months ago

Actually, two GTX 970's is more expensive than a GTX 1080.

orbitalwalsh
  • 8 years 9 months ago

If your state side yes ! Your your UK, and thanks to UKIP the pound has crashed and 1080s are close to £700! Got these before the 970 had a price drop and still got them cheaper. I expect the pound to drop even more . all parts are now £10 extra from when I got them at least

JacobGunther12
  • 8 years 9 months ago

I am US, not UK. And, the price of two 970's are near 1080 (cheaper 1080 though).

Berfs1
  • 8 years 9 months ago

eh, not right now

JacobGunther12
  • 8 years 9 months ago

I meant close to the same price as the lowest 1080 at near $600 US.

Berfs1
  • 8 years 9 months ago

tru, but still, two gtx 970s can be found for 500 (250 each). Yes, it was on pcpp.

orbitalwalsh
  • 8 years 9 months ago

thanks :)

I dont have SLi my self but would due to 80% of games i play have SLi support or have files modded to allow it in some way

Cool looking build, and congrats getting this featured. May I ask why you choose that case though? +1

orbitalwalsh
  • 8 years 9 months ago

Was meant to be in a NZXT S340 but that couldn't house the res/pump combo so this was the next in line for being the smallest ATX case. And had the bonus of an extra fan at the top and an LED strip at the front.

for less than $1600?! LOOKS TOO SICK TO BE TRUE!!!!

INSTANT +1

orbitalwalsh
  • 8 years 9 months ago

Yep, the build was. Mostly thanks yo alphacool sponsoring the water gear which was £850+

f16poom
  • 8 years 9 months ago

That moment when the water gear costs as much as my main rig 0.0

orbitalwalsh
  • 8 years 9 months ago

AMEN !!!!!!

least with the GPX blocks, the actually water block can be kept and just replace the heatsink of mount universally .

I hear arguments of putting a £100 waterblock on a £200 card is a waste, yet so is on a £600 card when you bin it or sell it for the same price as someone selling a bog standard one down the line. haha

How was it to build in the Phanteks Eclipse Series P400 case? I was looking at buying one for my build and I'm still not quite sure so it would help a lot to have some input from someone who has experience with that case.

orbitalwalsh
  • 8 years 9 months ago

Was really good! the velcro ties at the back help greatly and lots of space in the PSU tray to hide cables if you did like me and use braided extensions. Nice as well that the PSU bay is vented , my PSU had light up connections and if you use 3x 120mm, with the bottom either cooling the HDD or a rad, the air will filter away this way. The edition of an extra 140mm over the NZXT 340 is a great bonus. specially if your using 3rd party GPUs were the warm air stays in the case. or Using a 280mm rad at the front. which you can easily do Push Pull with a standard 30mm Rad and a 300mm + card. I will say the holes at the top for the 120/140 fans arent great with rubber fitings to stop vibrations, there a little large. I could fit NZXT LED strips on all 4 sides easier then i could with the S340 and case the front panel without a battle, just got to get the position right on the bottom. I think the sound proof version wouldnt allow this though! paint job is solid and the window does have a dark tint to it (i had the black version) so LEDs is a must to see your rig!

Bloo3336
  • 8 years 9 months ago

I'm gonna be using the non-silent version with no window because I'm going for a mute/blackout look on it. I'm really hoping it ends up looking good, though the outside is going to be the Anthracite Gray color. I really have high hopes for the build, if you wanna see the list it's over on my profile under Selene.

orbitalwalsh
  • 8 years 9 months ago

Only problem with no window is you can't see it, therefore no real reason to make it pretty inside as you can't see it. The window versions are tinted anyways and only way to see inside fully is but having LEDs. I've tried the Hue+ with black background and blue chasing and it just picks up some of the xomponents . I regret not getting a window version of my TJ07 and everything is neat and it pains me I can't see it

Bloo3336
  • 8 years 9 months ago

I might consider one with a window but the appeal for me with this specific case was that I can hide the 3.5" HDD. The case I truly want is the Thermaltake X31(Non-RGB).

orbitalwalsh
  • 8 years 9 months ago

Nzxt 440 isn't a bad case for 3.5" HDD and hiding them. Also better air flow Also check out the BeQuiet cases ! 900 dark base is a dream

orbitalwalsh
  • 8 years 9 months ago

thanks and true! with the white build i got proper combs , this one I just used the slip on ones as I was too lazy and all my time is taken up with my baby boy. this build missed going to Computex which is gutting

kuglern
  • 8 years 9 months ago

Nice build you should consider putting it in a Phanteks ENTHOO EVOLV ATX Tempered glass case it would really make all your work stand out more. +1

orbitalwalsh
  • 8 years 9 months ago

true, i did look at the case. The trade price I would of got it it wasnt as great as the P400s return. Plus also the issue with cooling. the fronts not great on this but the two 140s at the top helps. When this thing is going the water temp is 50c ! lot of hot air in the case.

currently in LOVE with the IN WIN 303 though!

plan after next one to have a HOF build in there

colinreay
  • 8 years 9 months ago

The creativity juices (or water in this case) are really flowing here. I love the build, and I think your idea of doing that hybrid watercooled card is a great one, haven't seen anyone DIY that before, and think your implementation was excellent. Now hurry on that RX480 build man, can't wait to see it! :)

orbitalwalsh
  • 8 years 9 months ago

thank you. wanted to be a bit different! this and the asus version looked too odd to remove the shroud and i hate the Asetek AIO solutions ! so thought id do a proper job :D

was a learning curb. still didnt get all 4 cards 100% but say im about 90% there now for the future.

currently seeing if i can sell the RX480 due to the £ falling prices have gone up from what i got, and 1060 is a prefered card. but either way that or the RX480 will find its self in a Manta build, with some NEW Alphacool gear products on the horizon

If you don't mind me asking, what specific set of LED lighting did you use? I'm using the same tower for a build and I'm having a hard time finding LED strips that are the perfect length for all 4 sides. I'm considering just getting a really long strip and wrapping it around...

Hey I have the same card as you and I'm scared to overclock it (First Time Honestly) however i know the stock cooling sucks. I've been looking into the buying a new 1080TI Hybrid SC. Ofcourse money is a factor, maybe I should invest in some cooling for the card and OC it? Do you know any kind of Radiator liquid cooling for just the card that I can look into/is it even worth it? I'm not trying to do a full pump liquid setup, just cooling for the card. Sort of like the 1080TI Hybrid SC card if you understand what I'm saying. Sort of new to this but I want more out of my card and if you say its a beast on OC then maybe I should go that route. Just need some guidance, any would help. Thanks again!

orbitalwalsh
  • 7 years 10 months ago

Morning (UK) , If your able to overclock the 970 heavily it gives you the same performance of a 980 which is just on par with a gtx 1060.

Unfortunately the boards layout has VRM on the left of the chip because its a small board, most have it on the right side and would allow you to use NZXT G10 GPU AIO mounting kit and a cheap Asetek (corsair etc etc) Round AIO. you still could use it but would need heatsinks on the VRM.

1080 Ti is a mass load of more power! but 1070 might serve you better- all depend on your screen res and refresh rate. if your not running 1400p or 1440p wide screen and 120hz plus, a Ti would be over kill!!!!

1080 might be a better middle ground , and has had money off unlike 1070. EVGA do a Hybrid in that version aswell .

cost of getting a water block to cool the 970 would be £70, then a radiator and pump with basic fittings is pushing £100 here. Alphacool unfortunately dont make a GPU AIO kit for this card, they do for the gtx 1000 series though!

aoshi849
  • 7 years 10 months ago

thanks for the info, I OC my 970 yesterday and it didn't please me one bit. I went from playing simple games to pretty graphic heavy and I think I will upgrade the card. I'm looking at a 1080 or even a TI with new monitor. Appreciate your time mate!

orbitalwalsh
  • 7 years 10 months ago

And time , Ti for 1440p ultra wide, 1080 for 1080p ultra wide :)

case is really good, better then NZXT 340 as you get an extra 140 at the top to help expel heat along with having the ability to equip a 45mm radiator with push/pull easily! Just a shame theres wasnt a hole for gpu cables in the psu cover like other brands. Use high quality fans up front! like the S340 the intake is restrictive

screw what people say. Even Gigabyte told me I was mad! literally gave me the details for the GTX 1070 launch day but i still went with the build, and they would of taken it to computex this year had it been done on time.

just as long as the build is the build you want :D
