Aftermarket GPU cooler

Hi all,

Looking for advice.

I have a MSI - GeForce RTX 2070 8 GB Video Card and a spare Noctua NH-U12S air cooler, I have seen a few YouTube videos giving instructions on how to refit the existing GPU stock cooler with a CPU air cooler, this one in particular https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqVXSXTs9B4 is what I will use. I have checked and I do have just about enough space. I need, I think, mini cooler fins and silicon pads for the VRAM. I also need a way of connecting the CPU Air Cooler's fan 4-pin connection (the Noctua - NF-S12A PWM 120 mm Fan) to the GPU's 4-pin male connector port. Can someone please advise on how to resolve the electrical connection? Thanks

The U12S is the wrong sort of cooler, something like this would be more suitable

as for fan cables, these should do the job

Both cool the CPU chips and neither cool the VRAM chips. Provided the U12S fits is there a difference other than the fan connection?

The difference is that the U12s is designed for CPUs, whereas the Morpheus II is designed for VGA applications

True, but provided the U12 4 pin fan header can be wired into the JST XHP-4 connector (https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/jst-sales-america-inc/XHP-4/455-2267-ND/683353), the fan will work with the CPU. Do you know anyone who has tried this? Thanks

I don't know anyone who has tried doing this, but that video shows a GPU cooler, not a CPU cooler (the u12 will definitely be not enough for the card, I fear)

The TDP of the MSI - Radeon R9 390 8 GB Video Card is 275W but the Noctua NH-12S has a TDP of 140W.

So no the Noctua is not enough. The 12S could be used on the Zotac - GeForce GTX 950 2 GB Video Card which has a TDP of 90W.

Is there a CPU cooler with a TDP of 300W?

There are, but I don’t think you’re getting the point (CPU coolers are designed to be mounted on a main board, not a GPU PCB)

This is because the mounting architecture is totally different, as well as the fact that the CPU cooler is much heavier, and does not provide cooling area for the GPU’s components (you’ll cook the 2070, I fear)

The Morpheus II I linked has a TDP of 325W, so it should be more than enough for the 390.
