I've also got an old LaserDisc player that I may convert a slightly older Compaq or Dell with. Both have faster processors but the faster Dell doesn't have much room for upgrades. Esp in the graphics end. The Dell had been upgraded w/ a PNY 256 Mb 6200 PCI full size card so long ago I dont remember what crappy chipset it had and tho the Compaq has the same chipset as the discrete card and has a PCIe slot, the discrete card was put in there to save the RAM for the system.
This was intended to be a free project so upgrading it at the moment isn't probably going to happen. If/when I am finally able to ditch the Dish and get XBMC 'wife worthy', then I can save that money and do possible upgrades.
Thanks for the idea with the adafruit. I was looking into nMediaPC for a similar application but this is cheaper. Now i have to hide away a few bucks so the wifey don't get pissed when i buy it..lol
The motherboard is stock from the HP I pulled it from. The parts list has a link to the system specs.
Speedfan shows CPU spiking @ 45C when loaded then tapering off to the 30s
Not intended for gaming, tho I will probably put Emulators on this setup.
good to know, ty
I went with the EVGA 500B before I saw your post. But TY!
I did, EVGA 500B. Thank you.
LMAO ty for the compliment then.
definately need to do something with it. it started acting up today. at least i hope that's the problem and it hasn't complicated something else. I need to pull the trigger on something under $40 but I don't know how much diff a 80+ is from a 80+bronze
I have found 2 diff Evga 500w 80+ psu with a decent jump in price. how much different is 80+ than 80+bronze?
Ty. I'll check that out.
I don't even play MC so is this an insult?
I decided against the SSD, boot time is not important to me. But maybe down the line.
On the Completed Builds page. Big blue button at the top. "Create a Custom Build" above search filters.
Never mind I found it.
i put the 650 in the case when i built it cuz i thought there was a prob w/ the 520, that's when he offered to sell it to me. turned out it was just the video cable.
Going with a Gigabyte GTX 650 Ti - lightly used - for $50 i'm picking up from a friend
Going with a Gigabyte GTX 650 Ti 1Gb that i'm gettin gently used for $50
tho that's a good price, i cant handle the rebate wait at the present time. and its out of stock at my microcenter :(
My budget is remarkably low. Hoping to snag something from craigslist or ebay for under $40 ..
I've been out of the market for 15+ years so no brand preference.
Reminder, I'm happy with gt 520 but need an upgrade due to fan failure and ownership, monitor resolution is only 1280x1024. I'm only looking for a cheap temp fix.
how about manufacturers? say having a gigabyte mobo and staying with gigabyte for graphics?
Has it ever mattered to have AMD card with AMD processor?
While on the topic, how about brand preferences?
I was just on Toms hardware looking at a similar answer, Thanx! now to find one on sale or used in my $-range
Fair enough, Thanks
i have no other game to base fps on other than wow, which i pull 30+ on high, You keep referring Radeon cards which is fine, i just don't know what is closest comparison to nvidia which i'm more familiar with.
honestly i have about $30-40 to spend withing completely pissing off my wife.
however, i want to leave money out of it and consider the lowest feasible card with non biased opinions.
What is the Nvidia equivalent to this card? I'm getting all kinds of negative feedback on gt 610, even the 720 priced higher on a different forum even tho I'm running a gt 520 that's on it last leg.
Thanks for the input.
Let's go back a bit plz, and talk about older cards or newer ones that aren't "gaming" cards. Mostly cuz onboard is not an option.
FYI the BIOS is stock, so don't fear this board w/ the Vishera cpu.
I have this case. its pretty good, tho a little quirky.
the fact that it comes with 4 fans (very quiet) is awesome, but the LED on the front fan is a lil blah.
Seems I might get a GTX 650 Ti from a buddy.
I ran out of time to install the OS, but so far so good.
