Forum Topic "Touchscreen not working after installing Ubuntu HELP"

Rofineli 1 point 4 months ago

You might have more luck asking on an Ubuntu web site like Ubuntu forums or ask Ubuntu. I suppose you've seen this https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touchscreen

Forum Topic "What are the thread ripper builds good for guys? Im really excited about them and the 8 core ryzen cpus aswell."

Rofineli 1 point 4 months ago

* ~400% more ~300% more. Or ~400% of Vishera.

Forum Topic "What are the thread ripper builds good for guys? Im really excited about them and the 8 core ryzen cpus aswell."

Rofineli 1 point 5 months ago

One thing I don't get is the stupid amounts of hype for threaripper... Yeah, it's cool and all, but maybe 5% of pc builders will actually use threadripper cpus since the majority of us either game or don't have the money, probably both,

Hi Rhali8, If the microprocessor industry could no longer produce faster chips, it would kind of crash. And throwing millions of transistors at a single thread and making efficient use of those transistors is difficult. Or rather it is often difficult to parallelize code that far without help from the programmer, and so chip makers are relying more and more on multithreaded code to make they're chips faster.

For example, a Vishera core has ~100% more transistors than a Windsor core and ~50% more "IPC" or benchmark value per clock. However a Zen core has ~50% more IPC than a Vishera core but ~400% more transistors.

I hope the additional Threadriper cores are put to good use.

Forum Topic "Ryzen/AMD opinions"

Rofineli 2 points 6 months ago

Things to know about AMD in general - they have good support for their GPUs/CPUs for years,

You use Windows 10 don't you? I don't use Windows anymore, but I've noticed a strong trend of people who use Windows 7 say AMD drivers are worse than Nvidia drivers and people who use Windows 10 say Nvidia drivers are worse than AMD drivers. Although Windows 10 users don't seem to complain about driver issues much.

I recommend a wireless network adapter with a broadcom chipset.

Normally it's recommended to use an Intel CPU and an AMD GPU as Apple doesn't use AMD CPU and doesn't use Nvidia GPU anymore.

I'm not sure if OSX is picky about mobos

Forum Topic "Agners Compiler optimization guide updated with Ryzen...."

Rofineli 1 point 6 months ago

To get the best out of it by these specs puts it as needing from the ground up to be built for.

Programs have been, are being, and will continue to be updated with further Ryzen enhancements. Cool off.

And this is a time when developers are doing the best they can to balance time to market and development costs well creating the best possible game.

Well. Devs have always done what they can.

We can already see this with the continuation of higher level API as the base development style for the easier development they offer and easier optimization leading to more time for polish and gameplay improvements.

Like how Vulkan is a lower level API than Opengl. The gaming industry is the biggest it's ever been right now. And haven't compilers always worked on optimizations when a major new arch is introduced?

but mindshare doesn't sell product

Yes it does.

You're wrong and I don't have time for this.

Forum Topic "Agners Compiler optimization guide updated with Ryzen...."

Rofineli 1 point 6 months ago

While I'm sure plenty of mutually exclusive optimizations do exist, what here makes you think Zen is different than any other arch in this regard?

Forum Topic "Best cpu(both AMD And Intel) for a dedicated live stream pc"

Rofineli 1 point 6 months ago

AMD themselves only claim Broadwell IPC levels.

I believe they claim this for Zen (the architecture) not Ryzen (the chips).

Forum Topic "Best cpu(both AMD And Intel) for a dedicated live stream pc"

Rofineli 1 point 6 months ago

Gaming pc intel for the ipc advantage.

Intel CPU have a clock speed advantage while AMD CPU have an IPC (instructions per clock) advantage, unless you are looking at Intel's high core count CPU.

Although what we should be concerned with is benchmark value.

Rofineli 1 point 7 months ago

Not very far.

It has a boost speed of 3.7 GHz and can usually over clock past that, but not very far past that.

Browsing through the above list for entries that list a CPU clock speed and that only have the stock cooler does show a bit of over clocking success.

The R7 1700 has a boost speed of 3.7 ghz while the R7 1800X has a boost speed of 4 ghz and doesn't over clock as well. The 1700 runs games well and can do things that the 6600k would struggle at.

Forum Topic "Help with linux"

Rofineli 1 point 7 months ago

Looks like it will work fine with Linux. The graphics card is the biggest concern as I believe the default drivers lack reclocking support on those chips (meaning it will run at a very low clock speed). Are you doing anything with Linux that requires more than the Intel graphics?

Forum Topic "THe deal with Ryzen?"

Rofineli 1 point 7 months ago

The fabric that ties the two 4 core chips together isn't great.

Source? The only benchmark I've seen that compares using two cores from each CCX VS four cores from one showed the two cores from each CCX performing better.

Forum Topic "Simulated R5 Benchmarks"

Rofineli 1 point 7 months ago

Having the active cores split up between CCX improves performance, presumably because it reduces thermal throttling.

Rofineli 1 point 8 months ago

I'm sorry, I don't actually own an R7 1700, I was going off the benchmarks.

When hardware reviewers benchmark a high end CPU for gaming performance, they have to use their highest end GPU and run the games at low settings and low resolution to remove any GPU bottleneck.

Edit; also I'm not a gamer.

Forum Topic "Ryzen 1700 or i7 6800k"

Rofineli 1 point 8 months ago

I use GNU+Linux and the GCC compiler, and Ryzen does very well compiling. It also supports ECC memory which is great for workstations with a large load on the CPU/RAM.

https://www.servethehome.com/amd-ryzen-7-1700x-linux-benchmarks/

I recommend the R7 1700 and a good SSD.

Forum Topic "Ryzen 7 1700 vs i7 7700k"

Rofineli 1 point 8 months ago

Many of those even don't spread the workload evenly so the hyperthreading can handle them easily

I assume you're talking about the desktop ports. Most people seem to be using two core processors in their desktops and not that many have eight core processors so the devs are targeting two and four core processors.

The kind of work game engines do is quite threadable.

Forum Topic "Ryzen 7 1700 vs i7 7700k"

Rofineli 1 point 8 months ago

Majority of gaming still cannot make use of the threads so in order of best to worst 7700k/6700k/1700

For desktop ports yes. But heavy weight console games are fine using the amount of cores they need.

Forum Topic "3D modeling and video editing"

The CPU is just for consideration as we don't have third party benchmarks for Ryzen at this clockspeed.

Forum Topic "3D modeling and video editing"

It looks like the case comes with a couple of fans, so you could drop some or all of the extra ones.

Forum Topic "3D modeling and video editing"

Rofineli 1 point 8 months ago

I don't think that's an overclocking CPU, but you have an orverclocking mobo and cooler. You could get a cheaper case.

AMD and Nvidia design microprocessors. The printed circuit boards (PCB) are manufactured elsewhere. Take MSI, Asus and Gigabyte for example. They all design and manufacture PCB's with AMD and Nvidia GPU's.
