Ultimate $1000 Gaming PC

bloomchild

My brother-in-law will be heading off to college next year. He loves to play PC games but his only computer is an antiquated dell laptop that chugs under even the most simple games (such as LoL). I want to buy him parts for a new gaming PC and then build it with him, as sort of a graduation gift.

Here are the parameters:

  1. MUST come in under $1000 (give or take $100 for tax purposes, I don't mind eating that cost).

  2. MUST include an OS.

  3. MUST include an SSD (but not necessarily an HDD)

  4. Future upgrade-ability is a plus, but not a requirement.

  5. Smaller form-factor is a plus, but not a requirement. He will inevitably end up in a tiny dorm room, so space will be at a premium.

  6. Monitor and peripherals do NOT need to be included.

  7. The ability to overclock is a plus, but not required.

  8. GAMING takes precedence over everything else with this machine. No rendering, video editing, etc. I want to build him the absolute best gaming PC that $1000 can buy.

I've just finished a ~$1K build for another poster but it doesn't include OS, you could drop the hdd in the mean time I guess...?

If he doesn't have to pay his electric bill a cheaper less efficient psu would be another option - http://pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-power-supply-p1650snlb9

Here's what I was able to come up with, using an amalgam of the two previous builds as well as a few choices of my own.

Updated the build. Swapped the mobo to a cheaper (but still decent) one. Changed the PSU. Managed to upgrade the SSD to 256gb.

well this is the absolute best that you can get for $1000 without an ssd or os and i guarantee it. since its a gaming pc u dont need ssd so forget about ssd and use that money on keeping the video card at the best place $1000 can get u. and an os will be under $100.so youll hit the $1100 mark just fine while maintaining the best possible $1000 build
