2nd Build, mostly business and data apps, but power user

I built an AMD system about 10 years ago that still runs file, but I don't want to re-use any parts since that PC can be a backup or repurposed. My primary needs: lots of hard-core business computing. Sometimes zipping up many huge files at once. need very fast loading of apps and boot up. decent amount of data intensive processing: Excel or Access files with millions of rows to query Some video editing but not much not really into much gaming but will do plenty of video streaming I am learning about managing servers and might set up a VM for testing but not for production I'd like to spend $500 or so not including monitor/keyboard/mouse. Budget is not firm. Would spend up to $700 if necessary. Don't care much about looks but would love for the system to be quiet. I don't plan to mod or overclock I would like to start with SSD drive (250 GB ?) and maybe expand at some point to add a 1TB drive for storage I am inclined to believe that an AMD processor in the $100 range is really enough but can be convinced otherwise !

Thanks for any help !! have a great weekend ya'll !! JS

ok trying to fix formatting data intensive work (probably Win 8 and Linux dual boot) don't have strong preference for form factor Budget $500 but can spend more if needed (not incl. peripherals) looks not important, quiet would be great SSD drive to start some video editing, no gaming thanks!

You've waited so long; here are TWO builds - one Intel, which focuses on your zipping, program loading, boot time, and video streaming, and one AMD, which focuses on your Excel/Access processing and streaming more than one video at once. Basically, one is for extreme single-threaded performance, the other is for HSA and a more robust multitasking experience.

Hi Eschaton -- thank you -- i was keen on that Kaveri APU. I am wondering though if I should get a better CPU cooler if i choose that setup. i like what you've pulled together and will worth through the options. thanks !

No problem! I don't think you need a better CPU cooler unless you will be overclocking.

I went with a 6 core processor instead of 4 and added 16gb of memory. If you want to get closer to the $500 mark you can go with just 8gb of memory..I typically go with 16GB of memory for business systems if can fit in budget.
