MoBo PWM chassis fan headers use

How do motherboard chassis fan headers work, obviously they allow for fan speed control but how do they adjust? Do they respond to thermals like the cpu fan header, or can i control them through specific software or any software(Say iCue)

You can use SpeedFan to control fanspeeds individually (chassis, CPU and GPU).

Here is a neat write-up from Tom's Guide. (https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/glossary-pwm-pulse-width-modulation-definition,5888.html)

Essentially, the PWM connectors can change the amplitude of the electric current running through 4th wire, which tells the fan at what speed to run. It's like a throttle control on a car.
