Our seventh Charity:Water completion report arrived! Thanks to your support, we were able to fund 19 community water projects serving 4,418 people in Ethiopia.

I love seeing these reports. It's great to actually see a tech-based site post something like this. Others, even though they do offer the option donate to charities, none of them seem to show any proof that what is being donated is going to the supported cause. Not the case with PCPartPicker!

I have appreciated this place as a very helpful venue to me in my desire to learn how to, and build a pc. I already had a very favorable perception of this place. When I get on the internet, pull up google chrome, pcpartpicker.com is the main page I saved to load up first. If it was not for this site, and all the people that helped me along the way here, I might not had ever built my first pc, back in 2014.

But it is because of the giving back to others, like this here, is why I am proud to be a part of this community in the first place. :) Thank you for all the help you have done for others by giving water to places that would not have had it like that, if it was not for you guys.

That's me and my family. (My last name is Carmichael.) Our first Charity:water donations came from me personally, and then when the business grew we never changed the attribution. I'm not in it for the plaque though (and the other guys here at the business know that and don't care what's on it). Though I understand starting 2017 they won't be doing the plaques any more, which is totally fine.

The desire of my heart to help those in need does not stop at the border to my country. Helping homeless individuals is a worthwhile cause, but it's also a complex one that funding alone cannot solve. Water is as fundamental of a need as it gets. Access to clean water not only saves lives - it allows children time to go to school, get educated, and have hope for their future. One well can transform a community. There are over 600 million people in the world who do not have access to clean water. That is the need I have chosen to focus on.

My opinion got me a -2, oh sure I'm the bad guy for giving out my opinion lol.

I said nothing else because I saw nothing wrong with the answer. The issues in this planet will not be solved by one person or even 1 group, it would take a unanimous world effort to fix the world and a full countrys cooperation to fix a countrys issues and thats not happening any time soon(if ever).

The way i see it, neither of you is wrong, and neither of your options creates a guarantee or permanent fix to the issue you chose to fix. Because no issue is ever that simple.

But you are doing what you can and at least for the moment it does what you both intend..it helps.

Providing a well has its own complications from helping the homeless. I just hope you also provided or set up local government assistance to take care of those issues(maintenance/repairs). Because if they couldn't help themselves to pay for the well to begin with, its just a matter of time before they are back to square one.

If I do nothing, I will certainly not make a difference. However, I'm doing something, and it is making a difference. Is it solving the entire world's problems? No. But go ask the people in the communities affected if it made a difference to them. :)

As for maintenance, yes, that's a big thing to consider. Fortunately Charity:water is on top of that as well with their initiative called Pipeline. I highly encourage you to learn more about it here: https://www.charitywater.org/pipeline/

Yes, charity begins at home, this myth that we in the west are all living the dream while those elsewhere are screwed is way off, we have people living in hell too. Of course water is something all people should have access to, but there are thousands of charities and NGO's working on that and have been for decades (makes you wonder why they haven't fixed it yet lol, no demand = no reason to exist perhaps?), be nice to see something a little more original and much closer to home.

Way too much virtue signalling in here, amazing how many people feel the need to broadcast just how good they are, perhaps they are trying to drown out a different kind of inner voice eh?

Charity begins where there's a need. There's nothing preventing you from donating where you see fit.

But lets be clear: if you want to be snide or throw in veiled personal attacks, then you can find another community to participate in. They aren't tolerated here.

What you seem to read as people broadcasting "just how good they are" is everyone saying things like "good job" and/or "this is inspiring". I don't think giving kudos amounts to virtue signaling. Coming onto a blog post that shares the latest developments of an act of charity, and finding a way to imply that everyone but them is a dope and that this act of kindness is merely a pedestrian error, seems far closer to it.

In any case, unless you're going to reply explaining how you have been donating to charities that specifically target problems domestically (in which case, here are your dreadful kudos in advance), then you should heed legonate's advice and put your money where your mouth is. Meanwhile let people give the way they want to give.

I don't give to charities at all and I'll explain why.

Firstly it's like outsourcing your good will, literally contracting someone else out to help others on your behalf, chucking a few pennies in a bucket to assuage your conscience then going about your day feeling really good about what a wonderful person you are, secondly charities are notoriously wasteful and many are corrupt as hell, most are also overtly politicized, in short does that donation really pay for a kids education? or a charity directors shiny new lease car? or the expensive hotel seminar or overseas jolly? or has it ended up in the pocket of a local warlord - you never can tell.

Instead I actually do charitable things, whenever I get the chance I go out of my way and give up my time to physically help other people, for example I volunteer at a local centre for disadvantaged kids where along with others I cook meals on Saturdays for free, I also help organise a workshop that teaches young offenders at a detention centre about technology, that is real charity, this lazy empty self serving giving of spare change means nothing, it's virtue signalling distilled.

For me being charitable is a state of mind, I don't only volunteer locally, I try to be a decent and productive member of my community, if I see an elderly person struggling with shopping I help them, when I cut the grass in front of my house I cut both my neighbours grass too, when it's rubbish collection day I wheel out the old fellas bin across the road, yeah, this paying to feel better about yourself is part of what's wrong with the modern world, people should make more of an effort to actually make a real difference in their daily lives, it's the only way to make this world a better place in my opinion, it's the real definition of the word charity.

Your volunteer work is great. But this isn't a matter of local self-labor vs donating. It's not either-or.

For analyzing how a charity operates, check out Charity Navigator. Something interesting about Charity:water is that 100% of donations are sent to the field. Administrative costs are funded separately. On the back end of things I get progress and completion reports that verify my contributions.

I want to help, but I am one person. I'd fly across the world and build wells myself, but I'm just one person. It's not my expertise. I could do it, but it'd be very inefficient. Instead, I work on things I am efficient at, like building this site. This site makes more money than I need. Why hoard that money? I chose to give. I could fly over and help do the work myself, but I'm only one person. By funding the projects through donations, I pay local teams, helping their local economy, to do jobs they are specialized and more efficient at. It not only provides a need (water) - it also helps fund jobs and labor there in a market where work is not as plentiful as it is here.

It may mean nothing to you, but it means something to me. I don't care if you think that's lazy or whatever - I'm not doing it for you.
