Description

This is the beginning to my journey down the slippery slope of PC gaming builds. I am already feeling the upgrade itch. It's almost as bad as my car...

Anyways, onto the build.

I wasn't planning on going with a 980 but I was super lucky and I was able to take advantage of the price-match shenanigans that happened a couple weeks ago. Other than that, it's your standard, cookie-cutter gaming PC build. Nothing fancy.

One of the many benefits to the reference-sized 980 is that I could fit it in an Air 240, one of my favorite cases. I was originally planning on an Asus or MSI GTX970 or R9 390 and those wouldn't fit properly in the Air 240. Unfortunately, the piping from the H80i GT does interfere with the side panel but it's not too bad.

As for upgrades/changes, I'd like to find a quality air cooler to replace the H80i GT. Unfortunately it's tough finding a nice one that fits in the Air 240. I'd also like to do a complete Noctua fan swap. Finally, a custom sized and sleeved cable kit would be nice for some better cable management. I would also like to experiment with a custom water loop at a later date.

The build was a ton of fun and the performance blows all my old computers out of the water. This is just the beginning of the addiction for me, though.

So did you just happen to have those eyes in your house or you bought them for this special occasion?

Fanfreakintastic build though. +1

How'd you get the GTX 980 for $255?

Microcenter had a deal for that a little while ago, and apparently he priced matched it somewhere.

A featured build with the amount of pictures in the single digits?..

It's because the photography is superb.

Pics are clean. +1. How's quality of the case? I know someone who used the 540 and said it was rather flimsy feeling...

  • 1 point

Thanks! Quality is pretty good. The gaps between the panels isn't equal all the way around and the window scratches soooo easily. The chassis paint also comes off when you tighten screws, especially for the power supply. Imo those are pretty minor things.

"but I was super lucky and I was able to take advantage of the price-match shenanigans"

yeah no joke OP. Staples,Best buy and every other store you can think of gave me the finger on price matching lol. Nice build

Yeah Best Buy wouldn't do it but Staples did it no problem. Luckily I ordered early enought and my order wasn't canceled.

Love that Air 240 case, but it does make finding a compatible air cooler hard. You might look into this one from Noctua though:

Thanks! I'll definitely have to try one of those out. I love the look of quality air coolers.

Very nice! I did one myself recently! it's an awesome case. though your's look neater than mine...haha :)

Good job!

I spent a good amount of time routing everything. Unfortunately I had to do it twice because the Gigabyte motherboard I originally bought was DOA.

Probably one of those micro center deals.

Oh you people in the US, such cheap prices compared to prices here in AUS. A very nice build, clean and elegant.

The back of that Air 240 gives you so much room to stuff cables :c.

Awesome build and awesome pics! What camera did you use?

  • 1 point

Thanks! Just a Nikon D3100 with the 35mm f/1.8

It's a decent camera but I'm starting to outgrow some of it's limitations, especially in low light. My next major tech investment will be a full frame, probably a D750.

GTX 980 SC for 255 O.o I got a 970 for that price

That's a good price for a 970!

If you do end up switching to a different cooler, can you test fit the H80i on the other side of the case and see if it'll reach? I've been curious, and I'm trying to figure that out for my next build. Thanks.

  • 1 point

Do you mean on the power supply side? I believe there is a place for a 120mm fan so you might be able to mount the rad there. Getting the cup block with pipes attached through the paneling might be a bit difficult though.

  • 1 point

I do, and it's been done with other coolers. I was just curious if that one in particular has long enough hoses. You just have to pull the block through from the PSU side, or so I hear.

Hey nice try a i7 instead of i5, but good ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

  • 1 point

i7 is unnecessary. I'm not doing any modeling or rendering so the i5 fits my needs. Plus I was trying to keep costs down and $100 is $100.

How do you like the keyboard?

  • 1 point

It's been great so far. I do miss the rgb color capabilities but I have made it work. I recently spilled beer all over it. I went crazy cleaning it and it's as good as new. Once I'm done with school I think I will go to a tkl or ducky mini since I won't need the number pad anymore.

If you are selling it soon, contact me.

  • 1 point

Do you think I should get it for $105 used and shipped or the Corsair k65 RGB for $80 shipped?

  • 1 point

Sorry for the late reply. However it's really based on taste. The K65 doesn't have a number pad. If you don't need a number pad then that's not an issue. Also, the K65 is only offered Cherry MX Red's. I have Browns in my Shine 4. My buddy has a K65 and I can say that I definitely prefer the Browns. In fact, I think my next keyboard will be MX Blues. Like I said, though, it's all based on personal preference. The only reason I bought this is because I got it on sale for $105 shipped from NCIX.

Corsairs H100i will fit. They actually feature it in the Corsair's air 240 build video they posted on youtube. Its in a push/pull configuration. Im a big Corsair fan so I recommend the H100i. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEVn2-PEbuA

Honestly, I'd rather go to a good air cooler. I get super good temps with my H80iGT but it's really loud. Maybe swapping the fans out would help. However, I still think the AIO is overkill for my application. If I had to do it over again, I would go with a Noctua D9L.

Thank you! I'm really looking forward to doing more builds, hopefully with some more custom touches.

As for the sticker, it's kind of car oriented with a heavy Japanese influence. Here's where I picked them up: http://thedreamroom.bigcartel.com/
