The Monolith

by BertTabak

This is my first build ever. I use it for photo and video editing, but mainly for gaming. A long time ago I used to play FPS like Quake and CS 1.6. Overwatch, Doom and PUBG got me back in...

The rig sits in the middle of my living room, so I wanted something quiet and clean. I went for the new NZXT H500i. A nice upgrade over the S340. Cleaner looking, outside and inside.

By watching a lot of YouTube and PcPartPicker builds I figured out what I wanted to do. 8700K and 1080 Ti Hybrid and Kraken X62. I changed the radiator fans to Be Quiet Silent Wings 3. 2x 140mm for the Kraken, 1x 120mm for the 1080 Ti. Under full load the rig produces about 30dB.

I went overkill on the HX1000i PSU, because it has fanless mode up to 400W. Cables are from Cablemod.

My wireless router is on the other side of the room and I don't want to run a cable. With the TP-Link Archer I get around 320Mbps over WiFi. Very solid.

The idea of an ultrawide monitor also drew me back to PC gaming. I use an Alienware AW3418DW on a Dataflex Viewlite stand. The stand has an open back for cable routing. The desk is a vintage Galvanitas table. All wires are routed on the left back leg.

There are a few things I want to adjust. The motherboard only has two USB headers. Add an internal USB hub, so I can use the PSU's iLink. Get black cablecombs. Perhaps change the Silent Wing 3 on the GPU radiator for something that will spin on lower RPMs.

EDIT: Thank you all for the positive feedback! I was a little bit intimidated starting the building process. So all comments & points make the final result extra sweet. Thank you all!

Excellent build, excellent photography. Your living room is so clean, and your cables are well managed. Honor for you, honor for your family, honor for your cow.

Nice, howz the h500i... Look super clean. Good Job.

BertTabak submitter 1 Build 2 points 10 months ago

Thanks! I love the case. Very clean, as the top and front are one piece of folded metal. The glass panel locks in quite clever, with only one thumbscrew in the back of the case. Good cable management routing. Also the Smart Device is very convenient in combination with the Cam software.

Love this! where's that desk from?

mllejules 2 points 10 months ago

Seconded - need that desk! Share your source!

Thank you! The table is a Galvanitas TD4. It's a Dutch design from the 50's. It's from a vintage design store outside of Amsterdam.

Absolutely gorgeous .... and the PC is nice too.

Your cable management is top notch, inside and outside of the PC. Super clean look, with no obnoxious lighting. +1

THIS is a machine for grownups. Nice to see a build with subtlety and understated style.

I see this is the RGB version of the H500 case, and your cooler and motherboard have RGB as well. Do you actually use the RGB?

BertTabak submitter 1 Build 1 point 3 months ago

Thank you! I have the EVGA logo on the graphics card and the ring on the pump turned on. Also one of the LED’s in the strip up top. All dimmed down quite a bit and in a cool white. Just so you a little bit on the inside when it’s dark.

great pictures man... also sick build +1

finianb1 2 points 7 months ago

This is basically an actually good version of Linus's anti RGB PC. Except you didn't ruin a bunch of RGB parts by doing a bad paintjob. It's really a beautiful build.

The--unique 2 points 7 months ago

The whole black theme is crazy good, love it

MrGoshDarnit 2 points 6 months ago

Super clean and aesthetically pleasing build! I like how you incorporated zero RGB into it, and just kept it murdered out. Your setup is minimal and seems to fit well into your living room. Personally I like just a smidge of RGB, but no crazy colors. Just to create a sharp white glow in a dark build. My plan is to use the NZXT AER to create white rings inside the pc. In general I'm going for a black build, with a touch of white because of my case (Phanteks p400s Tempered Glass, black/white) and mobo (MSI Krait Gaming).

Oh, and awesome shots of the build too! I use mine for photo editing too and gaming of course.

looks awesome! curious, though; does the 1000W plat PSU provide any extra benefit over something like an 750w or 850w gold? the wattage requirement shows to only be about less than 550, so to me it seems like way too much overkill

DANIEL777 1 point 10 months ago

The 1000 watt psu has a fanless mode up to 400w.

Nice build, I think EVGA should've hidden the fan header cable at a less noticeable spot. It sticks out even with your efforts to cable manage.

I'd personally be bothered by it every time I look at my build lol.

PizzaDo 1 Build 1 point 9 months ago

That's a really clean build! I wish my setup was as bright and organized as yours :P

MurkDaddyFlex 1 point 9 months ago

This is, by far, the most elegant build I've come across. So much so, that the majority of the components (aside from what I'm able to recycle) are now in route to my front step. As a fellow photographer/editor, I appreciated the time and care you took in capturing your build/build process. I also appreciate the methodical approach you took to conceive the build. It's all just very nice.

I do have three questions, however. 1) Why the choice to go with CableMod cables rather than just using the provided cables from the PSU? 2) How did you swap out the fans on the Kraken, and do you feel the swap made a significant improvement in noise reduction? 3) What was the reasoning behind the Corsair ML140 fan?

Again, I really enjoyed this. Thank you.

BertTabak submitter 1 Build 2 points 9 months ago

Thank you so much for the amazing compliments!

To answer your questions...

1 - I like the look of the sleeved cables better than the stock plastic cables.

2 - It is very easy, you can just leave the stock fans in the box and screw on whatever 4-pin fans you like. I have tried the stock fans and there is definitely a difference.

3 - The top fan is very visible, so I chose the ML140 mainly for aesthetic reasons. It is absolutely silent though.

I did change the 120mm Be Quiet fan I used on the EVGA radiator. It doesn't spin on low rpms. So I changed that for a Corsair ML120, and plugged that in the NZXT smart device for better control.

I hope this helps! Looking forward to seeing your system!

MurkDaddyFlex 1 point 9 months ago

Thanks for getting back to me! Good to know in regards to the fans. I'm all for getting as quiet a system as possible.

bobbyspiser 1 point 8 months ago

Does the case come with LEDs.

BertTabak submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Hi Bobby,

Yes, the H500 i-model comes with two LED strips. One on top and one behind the cable cover.

All controlled with the smart controller.

The H500 non-i model doesn’t have LED’s & controller.

Hope this helps.

Cyantan 1 point 8 months ago

Incredible setup! I aspire to take inspiration from it and build a similar one of my own. I do, however, have one question. Why did you choose to end the cohesion by adding a singular Corsair ML140 Pro fan? All the best and I sincerely hope you enjoy that epitome of a PC.

BertTabak submitter 1 Build 1 point 8 months ago

Hi Cyantan,

Thanks! Would love to see your setup when you are finished.

The corsair fan is the only one that is visible, as the bequiet fans are sandwhiched by the radiators. So from an aesthetic standpoint I chose the corsair for the top case fan.

JayDexter 1 point 8 months ago

Fantastic build. I was researching for my first build and stumbled across your post linked to the H500i which I thought was a gorgeous case. You're build inspired me to go non-RGB.

I actually love the Galvanitas table, and would love one for myself. In searching for it I can only find it in dimensions of Height-75cm Width-90cm Length-120+cm. 90 cm's seems excessively deep for a desk against the wall, yours doesn't look that deep. Would you mind telling me the dimensions of yours? Did you have the size custom cut?

kimbo987 1 point 8 months ago

Beautiful build. Is there a major difference between the EVGA GTX 1080 Ti Hybrid and the non-hybrid? any advantages to having one or the other?

BertTabak submitter 1 Build 2 points 8 months ago

Thank you!

Well, the hybrid is supposed to be a bit cooler and a bit more quiet. And I really like it aesthetically. The only annoying thing is the pump noise on the card is audible. Not loud, but the noise it makes is bit more distinct than fan noise. In hindsight I might have rather used the MSI gaming trio 1080ti. This card is supposed to be ultra quiet... but it is ugly....

thayes427 1 point 8 months ago

amazing, I love your setup! One question, with the front I/O, NZXT cooler, and smart device, did you need 3 internal usb 2.0 headers on your MOBO?

Damn dude, clean setup. I love how u didn't jump on the RGB hype train as well. Also, how can u use a desktop with the task bar at the top? XD I can't stand it tbh. Just my opinion anyways lol.

gezginboa 1 Build 1 point 21 days ago

it's a nice wallpaper. where can I find it?

hi_im_snowman 0 points 10 months ago

Please don't take this personally, but I find that the build is generic and aside from the polished cable management, not generally worthy of a feature. Does it look good? Sure, but I mean black, silent and on-budget are the only conditions one must follow to create this. There's nothing unique, particularly difficult, extra, custom or personalized about it. It's another all-black, albeit pristine, build showcased with high quality photographs.

That being said, I'm not a Barbarian and can certainly appreciate a good feedback sandwhich. You're obviously a talented photographer, have a great eye for design and are very meticulous about aesthetics. There's a good applause deserved here for the patience it took to assemble this build and its setup as cleanly as you have. That complete setup is pretty sexy, that's for sure.

It gets my +1, gj!

SirHalpin 1 Build 4 points 10 months ago

I agree with this. beautiful build, with very good cable management, good choice of parts, and great pictures. Eh, expected something special for feature though.

EagleByte 1 Build 7 points 10 months ago

Like RGB? No, thank you. This is a great build, and very special. Look how much the setup cost him: nearly $5000. Is that special? I think so. Maybe RGB isn't always a good thing. I sure don't want my build standing out like that. This build, though, is how I dream my build looking some day: clean, elegant, and blending in. Honestly, I think this deserved every upvote it got, and fully deserves a feature.

SirHalpin 1 Build 2 points 9 months ago

so any expensive build that doesn't have RGB and looks clean deserves a feature? where do we draw the line? I saw a modded case build release at the same time as this, and clearly the builder put a ton of hours into personalizing the build, making it unique. but it will never get feature now because this beat it out. I think that's the shame of making this build a feature.

EagleByte 1 Build 3 points 9 months ago

No, I'm just saying that over-the-top, RGB builds are everywhere. I just prefer this type.

I have nothing against people who build RGB systems or have modded cases. And, that guy may have a chance, because they don't only pick new systems. Besides, the ones that are featured are up only about a week (that's what I've noticed).

SirHalpin 1 Build 3 points 9 months ago

that's fair I guess. But as far as not featuring only new systems....its kinda like Instagram; when you post will greatly influence the total exposure and likes a photo gets. Same as a completed build on here. Once a build is no longer on the home screen the opportunity to get Featured plummets to almost nonexistent. That's essentially a week of completed builds that will most likely never get featured.

Zambacan 1 Build 4 points 10 months ago

I guess we all see the world differently. To me it’s anything but generic. A simple idea executed to perfection and more than worthy of a feature build. One of the best I have ever seen.

cheesywhales 2 points 10 months ago

This is a slick, blacked-out system with great cable management. Absolutely worth a feature and it certainly caught my eye from the front page.

Takes some planning and finesse to create a simple, understated, sleek build and do it well. This is not your typical PC with RGB out the wazoo.

vegaspimp22 3 Builds 2 points 7 months ago

Honestly here is how you get likes/ features. 1.) Build pretty clean, no loose cables no junk visible. 2.) Have some color coordination 3.) THE MOST IMPORTANT PART, take nice photos. Honestly the first 2 can be excluded. If you take a nice photo your featured. I understand the allure, but some builds get completely looked over because they used a cell and not a $2000 DSLR, even thought months of work went into the PC itself. Its crazy. With that said, this guy takes some of the best pics i have ever seen on this site. And not to take away from his build, its beautiful. Its just there are 10000000 others just like it. Again though, nice build, AMAZING pictures.

hi_im_snowman 1 point 4 months ago

Just about what I was trying to say. Not at all a slap at OP's build or worse still, his/her photography skills, those are STELLAR, but moreso just an observation about the fact that it takes just moderate effort to build a pc like the one displayed.

Lardybob 1 point 4 months ago

what are you talking about when you say on budget? the desk is like $900 dollars

hi_im_snowman 1 point 4 months ago

on-budget: meaning, to respect one's budget. Has nothing to do with price.

When a project manager accomplishes a project "on-budget", it means that he respected the allowed budget, It does not mean that he bought cheap parts. Who cares if that desk is 900$ or 90,000$? That's not at all my point.

Lardybob 2 points 4 months ago

ok you win. You just made me remember a jayztwocents video about "budget builds" and he said basically what you just said
