Okay, so for quite a while I have had thoughts pop into my head every once in a while that I could build a pretty decent PC using only parts from my "graveyard"... So this morning I went ahead and built this frankenMacPC.
Yes, the cable management is horrible and nonexistent. I didn't even make an attempt beyond getting it all plugged and in the case.
Yes, I know it is probably a very bad idea running the 2nd graphics card off of molex adaptors. This also goes back to point 1; if I were actually going to use this computer for any length, or even give it away, it would need a different PSU, and cable management would be done at that time, not that the case allows for much.
doing this reminded me how much i love those Enermax fans, even if they really don't get displayed well in this build. (the front fan is in an animated mode, thats why it looks different)
4.I set it up to dual boot Mac OS and Windows... because I enjoy making hackintoshes and knew this motherboard is compatible. Mac OS is on a very old laptop hard drive so not very useful. Windows is on a RAID 0 of 2 Samsung 840 EVO's and is pretty snappy.
I would probably stop short of 4K gaming on this, but it can certainly run current games well.
Overclock was stable and had acceptable temperatures up to 4.9GHz, but couldn't get 5. The benchmarks shown were run at 4.9, but I forgot to run CPU-Z verification on it again. Didn't mess with the GPU clocks at all, so just the factory overclock there.
Summary.... jeez, I need to learn to either stop upgrading so much, or to at least eBay the old parts while they have value. I think my sister could probably use this, though since she doesn't game, so if she wants it I'll pull the second 970 out and dial back the overclock a bit.
