Description

So It's been in my head for a while, since my main hobby is MTB and outdoor I am often frustrated with my old rig, especially having to play PUGB at low/med.

Old rig (2013) i5 3340 SSD 840 250 2x4 RAM ddr3 1600 mhz asus p8 z77 MOBO GTX 650ti

So my main games are Dota 2 and CS GO, now PUGB and Starcraft, I was in a rush for a video card and I ended up for an MSI GTX 1060 3g (my local dealer didn't have the 6GB at stock so I just took it).

After that my CPU was bottlenecking and I decided to make a whole new upgrade, bought first the PSU after the GPU. I was initially interested on the i5 8400 but last month its been out of stock everywhere literally, even at USA, so seeing the 8350k and 8100 really cheap and performing the same as an i5 7th gen, It was a no brainer for me. Picked the 8100 instead 8350k cause there were not much benefit going higher and also needed a CPU cooler, so its fine, later I will get a 8600k with a 1070ti if I get into games a lot.

I tried my best in cable management with this case, I guess I did well, looks really nice in the day and with lights off the MOBO has some light on the bottom plus the other LED.

At 1080p resolution with this RIG I get 200+ fps at csgo, everything maxed, PUGB 80+ FPS (All high, view, AA, plants at ultra), BF4 at ultra, and prolly will struggle in newer games like Witcher 3 and ww2 at Ultra but pretty sure could handle High.

Next upgrades will be a New case, maybe a more capacity HD and a m2 960 disc if I get to sell my SSD.

Part Reviews

CPU

Really good CPU, the same performance as a quad core i5 6th 7th Generation, capable of running all current games at 1080p. Best in value/performance for sure.

Motherboard

The MOBO pick was mainly because availability, color scheme (love red/black), same brand as GPU and is not expensive. Really easy to install, quality components and I just needed to turn on the XMP profile on EZ mode (1 button) to OC my RAM from 2133 to 1933. A breeze...

Memory

I found the RAM DDR4 kit 3000 GHz cheap so I picked it up, especially cause the brand and color. I use the rapid mode on the samsung SSD, this reserves a portion of RAM but makes the boot and loading frequent data really faster and with that active plus some tabs at Chrome while playing I was almost capped at RAM. Also having more RAM is better for games, while playing PUGB and a couple of tabs I am using around 8-10 gigs of RAM.

Storage

One of the best SSD back on the 2013, still really fast. Booting my pc in 5 secs with win 10 installed (rapid mode)

Power Supply

Cheap and really good looking, non modular cables are well protected and easy to hide with the black cover. All the essentials on the package included some velcro reusable ties.

the only problem with the price/performance of the 8100 is the damn overpriced motherboards.... good job finding a semi-cheap good one other than that only thing i can suggest is a cooler and maybe some rgb to light up your case... other than that great build hope u enjoy it :D

Yeah, for this CPU, the mobo is kind of expensive but it has nice features and will let me put a K CPU later on. Hopefully later this month they release the cheap mobos.

Yeah! I want the Cooler masterbox lite 5 RGB, can find it Cheap here, then I can use mystic Light function from MSI. Yeah an aftermarket cooler would look great on this build. Alltho the stock cooler keep temps fine, its ugly

yeah I couldn't live with blue in that red&black build xD but that looks to be the only "problem" so you did a great job :D..... if you do want to upgrade in the future I recommend going for an i5 8600k coffee lake as any higher would be a little overkill under 1080ti levels for gaming xD

Thanks for the sugestions! yeah the blue on the cooler hurt my eyes, I even used electric black tape, if you look closely, to cover the multicolor cable on the stock cooler but forgot that blue sticker. I will paint it haha.

Yes 86 hundred will be my choice with a slight OC just to let the world now I can OC too! haha

Might need to turn on XMP in the bios to get your ram to run at its 3000mhz speed. I haven't had that chipset before but on some past intel chipsets I needed to enable XMP to go above the base supported ram speeds. IIRC it may be 2666 in coffeelake but kabylake was 2400. Nice choice on hardware though.

Yes! All I did was to active XMP profile, there is one buttom for that on the Ez BIOS mode. In the photos you can see OC'd with XMP.

I really don't think your old i5 needed upgrading. You could've just put a 1060 6gb and it would run everything really well.

As you say it's nice to be on the new platform that has better chips, but you get really very little benifit at the moment

Well I actually tried that! I bought the GPU like 20 days earlier. It definitely improved performance on games but even at CS GO wich is DX11 I couldn't get over 100 fps, when playing FFA (16 players) it was really laggy with 4 cores at 100%. PUGB view distance (CPU intensive option) I couldn't even use it at medium, constantly freezing, low was fine, now I have it ULTRA.

Indeed isn't that BIIIG upgrade but enough for my playing, alltho I really want the 8600k, I might buy it later this year for sure then I have the build for 3+ years plus

Ah cool, well the i5 8400 is still a pretty sizable upgrade (6 cores and a boost of 4.0ghz). That would be less expensive and a more worthwhile upgrade to an old i5

I really want the 8100 but I just can justify the price of the mobo when the mid and low range ones are due. I am waiting for the B260 but if it takes much longer I may just go 8400.

mitchydunc 1 point 15 months ago

Is the price why you gave mobo 3 stars? Just wondering bc i might cop the same type as you but I want to know if there's something wrong with it.

Dtwenty 1 point 15 months ago

Same here, I don't follow the part where he say's

" from 2133 to 1933. A breeze... "

Typo? Surely a problem occurred that would warrant -2 stars, Id just like to know why as i too am eyeing this.

Could you test for me how many frames you Get in battlefield 4 without aan gpu?

Geeezas submitter 1 Build 1 point 9 months ago
