Description
This is an updated version of a build I did a few months ago. It is loosely themed off the NetFlix original show Altered Carbon. It originaly had a I7 6700 and a 1080 in it. Those parts were sourced out to another build for a family member.
At first, I had planned to go with a new gen Ryzen chip but the new itx motherboards were not out. I came across this 9900KF with motherboard bundle on sale for $500 and picked it up. I had concerns about trying to cool this chip on air (have not had a lot of luck with AIO's). Decided to go with the Dark Rock Pro 4 over the Noctua because it fit my theme better (although the new all black noctuas are out). This Dark Rock is huge! If you are going itx, you don't need to worry about motherboard aesthetics. You are not gonna see it.
Dark Rock Pro 4, well its big. My original RAM, Corsair vengeance RGB would not fit. The Hyper X barely fit with a little modification to the cooler. Wanted to try and just use the center fan so I could see the RAM. The be quiet fan was extremely quiet but did not pull in a lot of air. (135mm x 23mm) The Noctua NF-A14 provided way better performance although it was a bear to squeeze in there. Had to take the top off the cooler and slide fan in from the top. This was also the only way to install the cooler. Temps really surprised me. 68 degrees under full load at 4.8 GHz all cores. Some of the cores will hit 74 degrees max. (just let ASUS 5 way optimization do its thing).
As for case modifications, I made a new front panel out of carbon fiber. Made it flat and raised it up some for better air flow. I really like this case but air flow is not greatest. New front panel vs stock front panel was a 16 degree difference in cpu temp. That was alarming. I added carbon fiber plates both front and back to use as cable pass throughs. I spent a lot of time on cable management on this one. Especially the back. I used para cord sleeving and made all cables to length. I also modified the case to use 2 tempered glass panels instead of one so I could see behind the motherboard tray. I made a back lit acrylic panel to cover the back of the motherboard. There is a lot of RGB controllers and wiring in this thing. I had to make a lot of custom SATA power cables for this. Only place I could put it all was up top. This is the biggest ITX case I have ever worked with but you would be amazed at how quick you can run out of space. Decided to put in a 5in LCD screen in it. Use Aida64 to create the sensor panel. Because of the location I put the screen in, I had to use a SFX PSU with adapter plate to make room for the LCD screen. All the carbon fiber panels are 2.4 mm thick from Composite Envisions.
I went with the Zotac RTX 2080ti because it is one of the very few cards that is a true 2 slot card with a decent cooler. As with most zotac cards I have own, they run hot unless you replace the thermal paste. I use noctua NT-H2. Brought my temps under load from 88 degrees and thermal throttling to a more reasonable 66 degrees. Using 140mm intake fans and an SFX power supply really help here. The smaller psu has about an inch gap between it and the psu shroud. This allows plenty of air to get to the card.
For now, this is kind of a trophy build for me. It will be replacing my current gaming rig that has a 6700k and 1080 in it. Gaming Rig. Its a little over kill for 1440p, but why not.
