Description

I have decided to post this build, that is mostly being abused as a WoW machine by my younger brother. It is quite a funny coincidence because today I saw this video of linus (well known tech youtuber) building the same pc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1JA24KCAjE The used parts for this PC were all bought within the last year. None of those parts were bought new.

CPU: The Q6600 still performs well enough in most games. It struggles in BF4 on a 64player server(as you would expect) even when i threw in my r9 290x and turned mantle on it did not help much(32 Player servers run Smoothly btw.). I oced it to 2.7 ghz but I did not touch the voltage (could not find the option on this board). Cpu is great For WoW

Cooler: Works. I keep it at 1400rpm max.

MOBO: So far so good. I guess i can not complain for the price i got it. Has only 2 sata ports:(. Looks so tiny with the gtx 580 installed.

Case: Got it for free. The case is very sturdy and solid butthe side panel is missing, still trying to find out a solution, any suggestions what i could use as a sidepanel.

Ram: Is doing ine doing fine. 4gb seems not to be a limiting factor in World of Warcraft. Getting some Hickups in dying light because of ram limitations but for this budget i can not complain.

GPU: A bit overkill but at least i put it to good use. It was in my main rig an got replaced by a 290x. Only problem with this card is that it requies a beefy PSU.

PSU: I was so happy to find this on the internet barely used. With a bit of haggling i got a reasonable price. A psu with great reviews. Being used in many builds. Sleeved cables. inaudible at idle. I do not have to worry about burning my house down.

HDD: not much to say. It holds the os+games and boots up pretty quickly.

What do you think guys? Will Linus and Luke come up with something better than me?

*Benchmarks will be uploaded later. Or just ask me how a particular game runs.

It's a good build, but not a true under $300. No price for ram, hdd, or OS.

haahaah os. Wait Did linus include os?

I'm just curious, I'm not trolling or trying to put you down or anything like that, but why not list prices for the HDD or ram then? I'm just playing devils advocate that the price listed isn't the actual price. I or anyone else could make a similar build, not list all prices, and say it's a sub-X build. It doesn't make sense.

Those are the parts i did not pay for, had them laying around. But you can get a hdd+ram for under 50bucks i can assure you;)

The rules said everything had to be picked up, nothing from friends or stock. Other then that great build.

yes inspired. Thanks anyway

If that is the case, my personal build I just finished would go from $1000 to around $800 due to parts "laying around". I just find it poor taste to not list all prices from the time of purchase to make a build look cheaper than it was. Just because a poster says, "It was X-price I assure you" doesn't hold water because anyone can say they bought something for "X-price" because they say. Below is a link to one of my builds I have finished but am waiting to test the gpu with Heaven. All prices are accounted for and will have sources for how I received items at that price. http://pcpartpicker.com/user/CQC/saved/vzVCmG This is a real under $300 build with recent brand new parts. And I all but guarantee I will get no more than 10 TU if I put a basic title and do not reference a popular figure.

Really dude? You're going to call him out on poor taste because he used parts laying around that was sold many years ago? How do you expect someone to remember what price they paid for DDR2 RAM and a 250GB HDD. For all we know, somebody could have sold the HDD and RAM on Craigslist for $20, which is still under his $300 budget.

I mean, I can understand if the guy had a GTX 760 "laying around", but DDR2 RAM and a 250GB HDD? Come on dude, you're just wasting time playing devil's advocate.

No he didn't, so you are all good!

OS cost was omitted per the rules of this challenge. I was looking for the RAM/HDD price my self, there is a chance it came with the MoBo/CPU but this is not mentioned.

i got this cpu currently as a paperweight sitting next to my monitor lol. been sitting for 2 years. Pulled it out of a computer someone threw away. Now im tempted to make a little project out of it :D

Well they are building on a 300 CAD budget a little bit of a difference... Still this video series coming from linus seems very interesting

  • 0 points

Ik, it's amazing that only about $80USD I have no idea where I would go to build a computer with that budget.

  • 1 point

Oh then I must have misread the translation of that on linus' video it looked like it said it was equivalent to $78USd

Yes the prices are very approximate

I have been tempted on tossing together a rig on that $300 project my self. +1 You have also done a really good job with cable management with that case.

could you let me know all the games you benchmarked and on what res and also is that quad core cpu any good? i have an old pc with a 775 socket mobo and an old pentium is that cpu worth the upgrade?

  • 1 point

At first i would check that mobo if the chipset supports this cpu.

How this cpu perforemed: I have it at 2,7ghz(2,4stock) and i played battlefield4 on a 64player server with a 290x(with mantle turned on and settings cranked on ultra) and i dipped quite often below 30fps( 23-46fps), But a 48 player map is completely fine. I was also playing some dying light, but i only hat at thet time a gtx 560, but on the lowest possible settings(1280x1024) the game was very playable with only some hiccups because of the low amount of ram in the system (4gb). BF3 is no problem. even at stock speeds. 3dmark firestrike the system (with a gtx560 around 2800points) (With a gtx 580 4150points) Physics score was averaging at 4000points (Comparable to an athlonx4 750k at stock.)

Games like WoW MoP:Silky smooth

This cpu is glorious.
