Description

Owner of a Gateway fx6800 I wanted to upgrade the aging i7 920 to something impressive but the TBGM01 won't allow the xeon 5680 so my only route was going modern.

I received all the parts and was so disapointed by the R5 flmmsiness that I decided to build on my desk, off the motherboard with all the guts out. I had a feeling that the 7700k was going to be meh. And meh it was. 2x performances on paper seems a lot but in reality I could barely feel it. Even the IO was 2x n those SSD thanks to SATA 3 vs SATA 2 but still not exciting enough to warrant the 600$ upgrade. The liquid cooler did a great job but had zero mobo support, all auto and it makes the noise of a Diesel at idle. No thank you. I was expecting GPU type blastoff, the same feeling of true upgrade that I got when I bought the gtx970.

So the motherboard was returned to Amazon, the cpu to walmart and the case as well, the cooler back to bestbuy who knew it sucked. I have kept the PSU because it makes zero noise under normal load.

In a year or two, when the CPU war peaks, I expect to see another 2x, then I will reconsider. If it still stagnates I will keep on waitin'

Making this thing was very educational and now my old machine is extremely silent - I have mounted the EVGA, repasted with kryonaut, added a ULN noctua fan case and drilled out a few useless cases for extra airflow, replacing them with velcros.

Part Reviews

CPU

Mediocre performances from a company that has been hibernating for 5 years and that cares so little about us that its packaging looks like it would fit right alongside the socks and underwear at Macy's.

CPU Cooler

The sound of a Diesel engine at Idle. Good cooling though.

Motherboard

Clunky UI, decent OC

Memory

slow as molasse, get the 3000

Storage

cheap reliable and fast

Saying the cooler idles loud is a bit silly, just adjust the fan curve.

Good build.

Saying adjust the fan curve on a cooler that cannot be controlled by the mother board is a bit silly.

Why can it not be controlled by the motherboard?

I have a h105 dual rad cooler and i can control my fan speed no problem.

Different model, this one is a H110 and the one wire to the motherboard is only to give RPM.

Thats really weird that the fans can't be controlled via pwm.

They could but the fans are not the source of the Diesel noise.
