I don't have an amazing title for my build, it was my first build. I built the computer for home use and future use by being able to interchange/upgrade on my own. I was tired of buying prebuilt machines from Dell, etc. I stumbled upon r/buildapc and became inspired and discovered this website, both of which was beyond helpful. There will probably be little gaming even done on this and mostly used for working from home on the weekend and occasional photo editing.
It took me about an hour to build and booted on first power, the BIOS instantly asked for my OS usb and windows installed was a breeze. It has been 24 hours and I am still stunned by how smooth the whole thing went. It being my first build I fully expected to run into some problems even though I had done my homework and watched a ton of videos. I started planning this build almost two years ago and I finally worked up the nerve to start buying parts back in September of 2018. That is why some of the parts seem dated, but I am beyond happy with the end result. I welcome all feedback and recommendations for a future build, which I am planning to do in June for my 12 year old, so he can game.

Part Reviews

I manage to pick this CPU up at MicroCenter for this cost in September of 2018. I had read reviews on it and how it was amazing bang for buck and had hyperthreading. I am beyond pleased with its performance to date.

CPU Cooler

I grab this cooler at the same time I grabbed the CPU at MicroCenter. I knew I was going to do a black/white themed build and had read plenty of great reviews about this cooler. So far it runs quiet and with the BIOS of my motherboard I can change its performance.

I mainly discovered this board as I was looking for one that could run my CPU and had onboard WiFi. It helped that it was black and white as well to go with my theme. I am not into RGB but there is a header on the board for LED if I ever decide to go that route. The BIOS is simple and it also has Bluetooth.

Its RAM and it's 8GB. I was on the fence between this and the white version that is 16GB, but being that the most labor intensive thing I have thrown at it so far is Chrome, I believe 8GB will be more than enough. Also, very easy to upgrade in the future if I ever really need to.

I bought this drive to be my OS drive and I still do intend to get a WD 1TB hard drive to use for my primary storage, but for now it handles everything great and boots fast because its a damn solid state drive, why wouldn't it. I gave it 4 stars because it does not have 3D NAND technology, which I learned about after I bought it.

Video Card

Okay got the GPU because if my kid ever wants to game on the computer I want it to handle any video work we throw at it. I got it from a bitminer off Facebook and he had 35 of them he was selling and had restored it to factor setting. I ran Cinebench on it and it performed amazingly. I am happy with it.

LOVE this case. In fact when I started this build idea/planning my case was going to be the NZXT S340 but this case came out to replace it. I got a steal on it thanks to a r/buildapcsales post saying Google Express was offering 20 percent off purchases and Frys had it 10 dollars off as well. IT was so stress free building in it, especially as first time builder. plenty of cable management freedom in the back as well.

Power Supply

I know I know, that is a lot of power for just this build. Well this was another part I grabbed off Facebook marketplace as the guy bought it for a build but never went through with it. Was brand new and never opened/used. This is the one part that a lot of people skimp on to save money in their builds but it is also probably the most important part, so my overkill is okay by me.

I wanted my build to be clean and not shoddy looking especially since I had the H500 case and anyone that came to my house would see my computer. This added a nice little white balance to the theme and I couldn't be more happy with them.

Would have put more money toward the processor, but overall a great build!

A GPU backplate would be nice, but it is only a $500 build so you can decide.

I was wondering if that was even possible, because I agree with you a hundred percent. I will have to do research. Thanks.

This build is rather close to my BlackIce HTPC build I posted in 2017. The Pentium G4560 is a rather capable CPU but for only being a dual core I can't really see this being useful for gaming 5 years down the road but that doesn't matter all that much as you only spent $40 on it. Quite often you find used AMD FX CPUs for that price and the pentium is by far a better performer in games. My HTPC runs a G4600 (only 100mhz faster) and a RX 470 and I usually play my controller friendly steam games on it along with console emulators (wii and older).

My thoughts on your other part choices:

  • For the cooler it would only be useful for both asteatics and lower noise compared to the stock cooler and people pay more than that for RGB kits to light up the case.
  • Great bang for the buck on a GPU, even without a backplate that does not increase performance of the card. For higher end larger GPUs it can help deal with GPU sag but on a lower end rx 570 card that really shouldn't be an issue to worry about, especially since I don't really see any GPU sag in your pictures.
  • Ram was a perfect choice, that CPU only runs ram up to 2400mhz anyhow and 8gb is still considered the budget line now and is still usable. Can always upgrade later on if you need to.
  • PSU is WAY overkill but for $40 you didn't pay much for it. At least it has ample power to run an overclocked i7 + an overclocked RTX 2080 ti if you ever plan to upgrade later lol.
  • For the motherboard I take you got it with the plans of upgrading CPUs later on. Hopefully in a couple of years you can find a cheap used i7-7700 (or k) to drop in. Though used high end intel chips often keep a high price tag historically.

Everything purchased makes perfect logical sense for the most part for being a budget build. Also nice cable work. For a name I would have called it "Winter Blues" for being a white themed Intel build posted during winter time lol. Overall great build and glad to hear it went so smoothly being your first build.

Thanks for all the info and feeback. Yes I figure in about 3 years I would upgrade the CPU and switch from air to water cooler. Any chance you could link a good source to learn how to install/get older console emulators on it?

From Amazon you can get what is called a dolphin bar, it is basically a wii controller bar that goes on top of your TV that you can use any Wii controller with. Also works with motion plus. Next get the dolphin emulator online and install it. For games because I will not advocate shady sources if you OWN any of the wii games you can get a program to turn them into an ISO and save them on the PC. Then all it needs is to run the game in the emulator and play it like it was on the original Wii.

We cannot discuss other emulator games and how to get them due to rules but generally emulators are easy to search for and get. At least with the dolphin emulator and Wii games you can simply go to game stores and buy used wii games legally and play them that way.

This will give you an idea on how well it plays on my HTPC:

I do own the discs as I used to have a Wii before and it broke down and I still get new ones from a local store when I see them on for a good price. Because you can bring up the resolution of the game and add anti aliasing you do get to play wii games better than the actual console. You can tell the difference in my video with super mario galaxy 2 between actual gameplay and the video cutscenes as they are a set quality regardless of my emulator settings.
