Description

So I have been gaming for a long time and my old PC has been in poor working order for over a year now. I knew I needed some major hardware changes so I waited to build an entire new rig and motivated by all the beautiful computers I've seen on here I decided to try at one myself!

I used my graphics card from my previous build which was about the only thing worth bringing over. It's an EVGA NVIDIA GTX 970 and still runs great until I can grab one of those 1180 cards in the future! Aside from that I left 2 slots of RAM open for another 16GB to get when I make that GPU card upgrade as well.

Check out my parts list for more descriptions of the parts used!

Everything has been running quit and cool! Also the case is amazing aside from it being a little hard to close on the sides. That's my only complaint so far.

What are your cpu temps?

Cerval88 submitter 1 Build 2 points 6 months ago

Trying to fix my windows install on a different hard drive at the moment and I don't know where to grab my CPU temps in the meantime. Would BIOS be a good place?

SavageVector 1 Build 1 point 6 months ago

bios would get you idle temps, but you really need windows installed to get a good load temp reading with prime95 or similar.

Yeah I snagged my idle temp there and rearranged my ram just now. My problem is my mobo in instantly going into repair mode for the newly installed windows on this ssd and before I installed it made me convert to GPT, then wipe clean cause it couldn't install on GPT

Maybe it'll accept MBR if you disable UEFI and just force the drive to legacy mode. That's about all I know to suggest.

I did UEFI through the drive and idk if it was my sata cables or what but it seems to be working now :)

I can't believe I haven't seen anything about this case before; that top window is so unique. The back-brace for the GPU is also a really good idea.

The only thing I dislike is the cables, because the rest of the case looks so clean; but short of custom cables and a psu shroud, there's not really much you can do about that. I could also see an AIO cooler looking out-of-place in the case, but the black-top air cooler looks surprisingly clean.

Speaking of which, how are your CPU temps? I've heard the 8700k can overwhelm some AIO coolers given a strong overclock.

It took hours of digging through different options online before I found this guy! I fell in love instantly. I am having trouble getting windows to install properly on my 480GB SSD and keep getting repair issues after having to convert GPT, then clean after GPT wasn't allowing the install to go smoothly. Installed windows fine on the 1TB but I wanted to only use that for games, so until I get this figured out I won't be able to gtab that CPU core temp unless I can get that info from the BIOS. Any advice is appreciated :)

I didn't have any trouble installing windows on my 480gb SSD. The only trouble I had was my motherboard refusing to boot to my m.2 SSD. I gave up on that after a couple of hours, and just settled on the sata one.

Sorry I can't offer more help on the install. The only real advice I have is clear it with the maximus's clean erase, maybe another working computer's drive wipe; and just pray while installing. I'm sure you'll get it working eventually though, and I'm fine with waiting for the CPU temps under load; I'm a patient guy.

All good! I think it was a connection issue :) thanks for the advice though, I really appreciate it

I already owned the 970 from a previous build and I chose that board because my girlfriend has an extremely similar board with her current build and it's performed great. I had a really bad experience with my last gigabyte board and didn't want to go through that again. Also, every other board that was less expensive had considerably less ports which I wasn't a fan of. As for the processor, I was really going off of recommendations that other people using that processor had given me. I will be upgrading to a 1180 card in the future and adding an additional 16gb of RAM so I don't think it was a bad idea to go with this hardware. Aside from all that my only advice would be that you could come across a lot more constructive in your criticism, whether or not that means anything.

Thank you for this, I'm no expert by any means and that's great advice!

So after looking at my manual it looks like I have my RAM plugged into DIMM_B1 & DIMM_B2 and the left 2 slots are DIMM_A1 & DIMM_A2. So since they're the same letter type does that mean they're on dual channel?

Cerval88 submitter 1 Build 2 points 6 months ago

Oh wow, just found that I should use A2 and B2 until I get 4 sticks! It was recognizing them before but definitely needed to move to optimize them. Thanks for the heads up!
