Description

Updated: ADDED SSD, keyboard, headphones, speakers. (when the 300 gpus come out and the prices drop on the rest will update to a 280x 0r 290 or grab a 2nd 270x for crossfire. Also, want to get the 9370 in time)

Me and my 8 year son have been playing Minecraft, Mario, Kirby and games like that on the Wii and PS3(I also play God of War, Resident evil, any FPS game.). I started telling him about how I use to play on the PC (haven't since Unreal & half life - original release!). He got interested in PC gaming which got me interested again but our family PC could not keep up. So we decided to build a budget PC (budget set at $750). We came in at $768 if you do not factor in the OS or monitor which I had not even considered. He has caught on the PC gaming and I have found out about Stream and all the games I have to get caught up on (Far Cry & BioShock right now). This also doubles as a home office PC which entails a lot of cloud work and presentation writing.

Part Reviews

CPU

Solid, overclocked to 4.4 and stable. Had up to 4.5 but was worried about the amount of voltage. If I went water cooled and had a more OC friendly board I bet I could get 5.0 on this thing. Was going to get a 6300 but this was on sale at my local Micro Center so I jumped on it. Next upgrade will most likely be the 9370. (wanted a 8370 but it is so close to the 8350 in benchmarks).

Motherboard

Decent, no complaints Asus board highly rated. However, not the best for OCing and I wish I would have gone with the 990 socket and thought more about overclocking. Then again when we built this I had no idea about OCing we have learned a lot.

Storage

If you do not have the money for a SSD get this. It takes a while to learn which programs you run the most and slot them in the SSD portion of the drive. Pretty zippy but not a true SSD. This will be the storage drive when the SSD arrives.

Case

Love it, mid tower, clean design good air flow as the hard drive bays and CD ROM, fan controller bays have nothing between them so your front fan hits the GPU and mobo. The price is unbeatable for the case. Only downside is no window. I may cut one out.

Power Supply

Another respected brand. Semi-modular does what I need it to.

Monitor

Buy this monitor you will not be disappointed.

Looks good, but you would really improve the performance if you put a SSD in there and put your OS and programs on it. Use the HDD for data storage.

Dam5968 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 40 months ago

Agreed, the hybrid HDD is partioned to do that, it isnt as fast as a ssd but will do till I get a true one next month

LeMonarque 3 Builds 1 point 40 months ago

If you have an external backup to offload your current files while you do it, you could look at short-stroking your HDD into faster and slower portions while you wait for an SSD.

Well done on the clean build! How do you like that monitor? Physical design is so nice, but I've been on the fence with its glossy front.

Dam5968 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 40 months ago

WHEN POWERED DOWN THE SCREEN IS GLOSSY BUT YOU CAN NOT SEE THE GLOSSINESS ONCE THE SCREEN IS IN USE. THE PICTURE IS BEAUTIFUL AND THE SCREEN IS BOARERLESS SO IF YOU WERE EVER TO DO MULTIPLE DISPLAYS THIS IS PERFECT. I HAD PLANNED ON GETTING A BACKUP SO THAT IS A GOOD IDEA. THANK YOU.

sorry for the late question would u be able to fit another set of ram in there?

Dam5968 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 39 months ago

yes, the board has 4 slots up to 32mb. Also there is clearence from the cooler so no problem. At some point I may add another set if I get a second GPU to crossfire.

nehemiahawesome1 1 Build 1 point 39 months ago

i think you mean gb because mb are very tiny

Dam5968 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 39 months ago

yes I did, Thx.

froggeraj 1 point 39 months ago

you would be able to add another ram kit there is enough room?? under the cooler?

Dam5968 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 39 months ago

Yes The cooler doesn't reach the ram it just the fan you need to worry about and that you can move to the other side (as it vents out the top as well as the back). You can also just get ram with less of a large heat sink as mine, there is clearance it is the heat sink that just would hit the fan. If I get more ram I plan on just putting the fan on the other side.

froggeraj 1 point 39 months ago

so it pulls air insteads of push right???

Dam5968 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 39 months ago

I can or you can turn the fan over and have it push toward the ram, I would just let it pull however so no hot air is going to the ram.

33 degrees. ON LOAD. how did you pull that off

Dam5968 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 39 months ago

look at the pictures I'm running 7 fans Cougar dual-x all. ( 4 with a controller) and a cooler. I have case on a stand for better bottom air flow. Its cold in there. (Cupid HWmonitor, Speccy, Asus mobo software & MSI Afterburner all used as monitoring)

nehemiahawesome1 1 Build 1 point 39 months ago

that is freaking cool. but 7 fans really. because i added 3 fans and like they are spinning so slow but they are clocked at the highest they can do but they really are no use except the one i got including the case. that one is just fast. you are the first person i have ever say 33 degrees on load. Just wondering how do you know its on load and what do you use to test it

Dam5968 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 39 months ago

I listed the testing software in my prior post. HWcupid, MSI Afterburner, Speccy, Asus MOBO software. Run them all with 3Dmark and make sure all fans are at 100. The Cougar Dual-x fans are fantastic. I asked Linus from Linus tech tips the best way to place fans for optimal air flow. I didnt know 33 was that great. I saw one yesterday that was 40 under load and he had 2 GPUs and 3 monitors to power as well, I find that more impressive than my 33 with one GPU and Monitor. when not under heavy load I keep fans at 50% - the Cougars are super quite.

nehemiahawesome1 1 Build 1 point 39 months ago

most people had 33 on IDLE. Thats why your build is awesome. Like i have 33 on idle when i checked the bios. also my fan that came with the case is super loud so thats why it is so awesome. linus actually responded. on the forum or comments of a video.

Dam5968 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 39 months ago

Forum, Im a member of his forum. Join he or maybe it his team always respond. Idle I run like 16. I see plenty of people with low temps: http://pcpartpicker.com/b/rrHNnQ, http://pcpartpicker.com/b/DmPscf both list 35 under load (perhaps they just rounded up - i didn't I would have put in the to the tenth power if allowed :). glad you like the build. 2 more to go!!!

Dam5968 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 39 months ago

You should really upgrade your fans if they are that loud. Good fans are a must

nehemiahawesome1 1 Build 1 point 39 months ago

i just went to mircro center to get them

Dam5968 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 39 months ago

What kind did you get

devilstofu 1 point 15 months ago

you are obviously doing it right, but when the bottom exhaust fans blow the air out of the bottom, doesnt the hot air rise back up?

Dam5968 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 15 months ago

Not to an extent that it is being recirculated into the system

stone_the_bone 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Hey how is that fan controller I'm thinking about getting it. how many fans can it control anyway?

Dam5968 submitter 5 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

It works great, it can hold up to 5 and has a manual and automatic mode. Manual is better when overclocking.

stone_the_bone 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

Thank you so much!

Kagia001 1 point 16 months ago

You said on the 8320 that you coud have sone a 5ghz OC If you had watercooling. i just wanted to say, yes, peapole have done 5ghz+ overclocks on that cpu, the highest i know is 7.93151ghz. One of the best OC CPU's i know that is for sale.

The 8120 had a 8.3738ghz OC once, but you cant buy the fx-8120 herr on pcpp

devilstofu 1 point 15 months ago

that cpu can definitely not go to 6ghz, let alone 7.9 stop

Kagia001 1 point 15 months ago

I saw a Reddit with proof, 4got the link

fx8300 stops working at 4.4Ghz
