Description

Here's Mesa, my personal build! I knew from the start I wanted a white theme, but the lack of white motherboards meant that I was forced into the more common and less preferable red. When Z97 came out, all new the boards were odd colours too, no plain black ones (with the exception of the EVGA Z97 Classified) so I was still stuck with red. Then, the computer gods shined down on me, and gave my the MSI Z97S SLI Krait edition, just what I'd been waiting for for ages! The photos were taken with the OnePlus One, tell me what you think!

Intel Core i7 4790 - For my CPU, I went with one of Intels newer chips, the 4790. I didn't need overclocking, so I got the non-K model to save me some money. Mainly, I want to game, as well as edit/render videos. I also do some coding in Visual Studio so the extra threads definitely help there.

Corsair H100i - I really wanted liquid cooling in my dream PC, even though it is utterly and completely unnecessary to the cooling of my CPU. However, there are multiple reasons I wanted this cooler.

  • Noise - The H100i keeps my system whisper quiet, as I'd heard that the stock cooler can get loud under load with an i7.

  • Aesthetics - Come on, you have to agree it looks nice, right? ;) I also put the SP120 PWM Quiet editions on the radiator too, so it would look much better and be quieter.

MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition - This board. Wow! It's gorgeous! Deep black PCB, with bright white heatsinks and slots. I think that the Krait has the perfect balance between having the white on the board without it being overpowering. (I'm looking at you, Sapphire PURE CrossFire PC-A9RD580) I have the ability to upgrade to SLI later, which I will be doing for my triple monitor setup soon, so that was a definate plus. One thing I'd have loved to have seen would be a black/white I/O shield, as well as more USB ports on the back of the board, as I find myself always running out with all my things plugged in.

Corsair Vengeance White - Nice RAM, does what it says on the tin really. White heatsinks, decent speed and low voltage, there was no HyperX Fury at Scan so I went with this instead.

Seagate Barracuda 2TB - I had no need for an SSD, and 2TB will be enough for me for now. I will most likely end up with a 2 or 3TB SSD when they come down in price, so I didnt really feel the need for one yet. Decently fast and quiet for a mechanical drive.

Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 - This card is a beast! For 1080p, this card will literally max out everything at above 60fps no sweat. Max temp was just under 55O C. The Windforce logo lights up blue, which you cant change, but I really dont mind it, and I think it looks nice anyway.

Phanteks Enthoo Pro - This case is amazing for the price! I love almost everything about it! Great cable management, nice GPU compatibility and even better watercooling support. Only caviat for me really is that the window scratched too easily for my liking.

Corsair CX600M - Reused an old PSU, I am going to upgrade to a HX750/850i soon to make sure I have room for SLI in the future. The CX has mostly flat cables, which is nice, but I put the lovely white extensions on the end of mine, so they look a bit prettier. I thought I'd get away with the stock cables for my GPU, but they look awful, I want to get new ones ASAP. Unfortunately, they're out of stock on the 8pin white cable for the GPU, so I'll have to wait on that one.

That's my build! Feel free to comment any questions or queries, I'll answer them all!

Skemble! Wow man! Hey :) Sorry, never thought I'd see you on one of my builds :) Me too, I'm starting to think they're on of the few board manufacturers that is actually innovating at the moment, with the Krait boards, and the new USB Type C boards at CES!

  • 1 point

Well with that attitude! ;) I've gotten lazy about posting on builds mostly because I get so many PMs through out the week, but when I see something I like I will make the effort.

Sometimes for me it's the included software bundle. Asus and MSI have seemed to keep things updated and innovate, but Gigabyte has slacked since the Z87 release all those months ago. I am also excited to see this new black and white MSI STX 960! Too many things to buy and too little money! >:D

The Windforce logo lights up blue, which you cant change

Depending on how anal you are, you may want to turn off the blue LED altogether. This can be done in Nvidia GeForce Experience, within the My Rig > LED Visualizer area.

Awesome build. Love the white and black look. You make me laugh when you say you are going to buy a 2tb ssd ah n they come down in price. You will probably buy an entirely new pc before a 2tb ssd costs less than 1 grand

  • 1 point

Yea, probably true to be honest, but even so, I don't really see the point (for me at least) to spend the extra money to have your PC and a few apps boot up faster, when loading times aren't really an issue for me on mechanical drives :)

  • 1 point

Well. Pretty much a lot of people thought that an ssd is not something they need and they purchase it 1 time because of the impressions the pc communiry let on them. They are not necessary but they are nice. I am not a ssd ***** since it is only a boot dribe but everything feels snappier

There's always external DACs and sound cards, and Asus made a Sabretooth Z97 Mark S which is also white, have a look at that one if you want the white theme :)

follow-up on the Mark S... where do you buy it? Limited Edition and though I search about once a week I cannot find it for sale.

If you're in the UK, you can get it from these places: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-motherboard-sabertoothz97marks If you're not, just remove the 'uk.' from the link I sent and it'll tell you American prices. :)

It's amazing so far! I'm running at factory clocks as of now, and I get 70-80fps maxed in Far Cry 4, 90-110fps Maxed in BF4, 160fps maxed in Just Cause 2, if there's any more you'd like, I'll see if I can't find out for you!

I was going to go for that, and then I realised that it had a white interior which never hit me before. I could be the only one, but I think white interiors look awful :( It's a nice case though! I'd love to see how that build goes for you! Please send me a link when it's done :)

Hey man! That's an amazing build! Just a quick tip - if you are using an NVIDIA GPU, to change the green "GeForce GTX" logo on your GPU, just sand it down since there is no green LED, it is just a thin layer of paint back-lit with a white LED. So just in-case you want to make it look even more whiter, then here you go!

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/127424-geforce-gtx-logo-mod/

Click that link for more information and pictures! Other than that, one of the best builds i've seen!

  • 1 point

Thank you! I love it too! Unfortunately, it's the non-reference Gigabyte card which has a blue LED, so sanding won't change it D: Thanks for the help :)

I love this build but this is probably just me but i hate that the corsair power supplies never line up with parts. >:l

  • 1 point

What do you mean by not line up?

  • 1 point

What I mean by that that is that the stickers on their power supplies usually don't match the color of the build. Sorry for the confusion :)

  • 1 point

Ah I see, nice one! :)

Any thoughts on going with a Z97-AR over the Krait? I've had a few people shrug at the Krait, but then again they are diehard ASUS fans. It's more black and silver than black and white, but I think either would work for the build I'm thinking of.

  • 1 point

They're both great boards, I'd go with the Krait personally, but they both have colour scheme options in terms of other components. What other parts are you planning on?

  • 1 point

This is what I've been toying with. I like the case, but I've seen more BnW builds in the last 2 weeks here that I have in the last 6 months prior. I have some ideas for some mods I want to do, and do my own cables as well... I wanted to do black white and blue. So, lots of options still, but need to nail it down so i can actually start ordering some parts sometime.

Just got a chance to check out your builds and a few vids you have posted on Youtube and have to commend you for such doing such a fantastic job at such a young age. Keep up the good work and solid job on your build.

Thanks man! I appreciate it :)

  • 1 point

How is this rig working for you? I have a lot of similar parts coming on my build.

Is that mobo still kicking well? And are those cable mod cables I see?? Looking pretty good!! I got some of my own.

  • 1 point

It's a great build! The motherboard is perfect, apart from the fact that you have to Reset CMOS if there's a power cut, no matter if the system is on or off at the time, which is whatever. And they're not CableMod ones actually, they're Silverstone ones, but they're still really good!

  • 1 point

Your white cables are just extensions on the ugly stock cables?

  • 1 point

Yea, they are. For two reasons. One, you can't have full replacements for my unit because it's not fully modular, and two, you can't see the ugly end anyway because of the fact the PSU shroud covers them :)

  • 1 point

and you just stuffed the extra slack in your case? I grabbed the same PSU and thought id upgrade it for custom cables, but I think I like your method better. Thanks!

  • 1 point

Yea! Honestly, there's not that much slack! The cables are damn short on this PSU, definately grab some cables if you're planning on using a full tower. Also, you can't go full kit on this, since it's not fully modular so not supported by many brands. :)

  • 1 point

Beast. I'm planning on doing a similar build with that case and mobo, however I think I'll do a custom watercooling loop. Where did you get those braided cables? Thanks.

  • 1 point

Sorry didn't notice the silverstone sleeved cables. :/

  • 1 point

I'm sure it would look great with a custom loop! The cables are from Silverstone and are really cheap, and of a very high quality, I'd definitely recommend them :)

everythinh amazing but you have one problem your gtx 970 is bad card and in future this card if reach until 3.5 gb make in your mind this if on 60 or 70 fps then will drop until 1 or 7 fps so to slove this problem choise gtx 980 or 980 ti.

You can change the color of the logo by taking apart the cooler at sanding off the blue paint. It will look white, dint sand off the white part, once you see that all the blue is gone stop.

I'm currently looking at this case for my build I was wondering if it can hold 2 980s for the future.

8BitPhoenix- Sweet build man,Im planning on a similar build(blck/whte).Im in 2 minds with Krait to go with, same as yours or the Z170A.Obvioulsy Id need a skylake i7 for the z170 board. Anyhow my question is,Im going for a H100i v2 cooler,is there enough room for you to mount the stock sp fans above the rad(pull)and then 2 more(white led)fans beneath the rad(push). It would look sweet(yeah). I was tempted with going for the enthoo luxe but I fail too see paying the extra £40-£50 for some fancy rgb lighting,1 extra ssd bracket. But looking at the luxe,it does have more room up top for a push/pull config. So is there enough room(clearence)for 2 more fans?. Cheers bud,Im sure your proud of your creation,I cant wait to start mine.

Ok, so I know what you are thinking about the PSU and I am not disagreeing with that. I would like to say that with your processor and gpu setup you don't need an upgrade. Unless that psu is really old, replacing it would be a waste

Your CPU has a TDP of 84 watts. This is dialed down under idle. Then about 20 watts for the motherboard and about 15 watts for drives and other things. Then 145 TDP for the GPU makes your total around 264 watts of TDP

Add another gpu and your at 409 watts

Your PSU has an efficiency rating and when we use the average efficiency rating as a decimal to be multiplied by the total wattage (we do 600*.85 just to shorten the explanation a little) we get 510 watts

409 < 510

But that is my opinion on the matter

  • 2 points

TDP isn't always an accurate measure of power usage, since it is a measurement of heat. It will put you in the right ballpart, but a GTX 970 can use 200w, and an i7 can get up to about 100-120w. Also, the PSU won't be able to deliver all the advertised power, expecially not with good efficiency, and it may end up failing if it is continuosly put under full load.

  • 1 point

Fair point, I'll look into that a bit more :)

[comment deleted]
  • 1 point

Maybe I am wrong about that, but my calculation on system hardware draw is valid

I may need to take a refresher in PSU ratings and efficiency

It doesnt matter which slots the RAM goes in, just as long as they're not next to eachother. And yea, that's why I put my RAM in the white slots :P
