Description

This computer will be used for video rendering, graphics design, gaming, and hosting some local servers.

The build is still in progress and i will be updating parts as i get them, and adding more pictures and parts.

I'm currently waiting for my ram, need to order the ram blocks, and video card blocks.

1st build on pcpartpicker with a 980. 1st build on pcpartpicker with sli 980. 1st build on pcpartpicker with a 980 Superclocked. 1st build on pcpartpicker with sli 980 Superclocked. 1st build on pcpartpicker with Asus Rampage V Extreme.

I will be buying a temporary crucial 8gb ddr4 ram card from the computer store near me until I decide what im doing with the ram, so I can at least get a first boot and start to get the os installed, drivers, etc.

Got a first boot tonight on 9/21/14 at 9pm EST Had to take an H100i from my other desktop so it would boot as I did not want to fill the watercooling loop, to have to drain it soon when my ram, ram blacks, and videocard blocks arrive. Bought the temporary 8gb crucial card, so I could at least boot the computer and start installing programs while waiting for my corsair ram. Pictures will be posted shortly of it in first boot. I didn't take the time to do cable management yet as I'm gonna have to rerun the cables when i finish installing the watercooling.

I didn't take the time to mount the H100i as hopefully I will have all my watercooling parts soon.

9/23/14 I Downloaded 3D Mark Demo and ran the benchmarks. I ran the benchmarks without the cpu being overclocked, without the video cards being over clocked, without my corsair or g. skill ram(still deciding), and without my watercooling loop setup. Once I have the watercooling loop setup and everything overclocked I will be re-running the benchmarks.

9/24/14 Removed the h100i and installed my EK Supremacy EVO spu black. I have also finished installing the res, pump, radiators, and ran the beginning of the tubing for the loop. The watercooling block for the 980 currently isn't out yet so I only made a cpu loop for right now incorporating only the bottom radiator. The loop seems to have no leaks. Once I'm sure there is no leaks and have let the loop run for long enough I will boot up the pc and begin to overclock the processor. I will then update the "CPU Clock Rate" "CPU Temperate While Idle" and "CPU Temperature Under Load". For right now it seems I have been able to bleed most of the air out of the loop. I ran one tube for the top radiator with an approximate length for where it will go once I have the video card blocks. I also made sure that when I ran the tube to the cpu i left enough room to connect to the ram card blocks once I get my new ram and ram blocks.

9/25/14 - Mid Afternoon: I thought there was a crack on the cpu block so I drained the entire loop, removed the cpu block, and disassembled the cpu block to see if it was a crack. It was not a crack but only a residue type liquid. I fully cleaned the cpu block and proceeded to refill the watercooling loop. I have currently bled most of the air out of the loop and will let it continue to run to bleed the rest of the air out. Upon refilling the loop the cpu block gained what looked like a crack again, but thankfully now I know it is not a crack but a residue/air almost

9/25/14 - At Night: Checked frozencpu and saw that the 980 blocks were available for order. I ordered 2x gtx 980 blocks, 2x 2pack of EK-RAM Monarch Module, EK Monarch Series X4, and a EK-FC Bridge DUAL Parallel 3-Slot. Only the bridge was in stock. Everything else is only orderable, which means the stock is expected in 1-18 days.

9/26/14 - All day: CableManagement

9/27/14 - All day: Will be overclocking my processor and graphics cards. Then I will rerun benchmarks. Will update the cpu information.

9/30/14 - Afternoon: Got my new ram!

10/8/14 - Late Afternoon: Check the website where i ordered the rest of my watercooling parts, and they shipped today! They should be delivered this coming friday(10/10). Both video card blocks, acrylic bridge, and ram blocks!

10/10/14 - Received my video card blocks and ram card blocks! installed both and have them installed in my computer!

10/11/14 - Started running the tubing and added the ram, video cards, and second radiator into the loop.

10/12/14 - Filled the loop and have it currently running and bleeding!

10/22/14 - Took me awhile (not happy about) but finally upload the waterblock pictures and the picture of the computer finally done!

Will upload pictures soon

are you planning on adding ram to this build.......

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 3 points 37 months ago

Yeah I'm waiting on the ram, due to waiting for EK to come out with possibly new ram blocks and I wanna make sure its compatible.

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 2 points 37 months ago

Also the computer store near me hasn't gotten the ram I want in stock yet, and im debating between Corsair and G. SKILL. Also what speed I want. I will probably go with a stock lower speed, because it will be in the watercooling loop and I can just overclock it, instead of paying double for the same amount of memory at a faster stock speed.

Sirpz 1 Build 2 points 21 months ago

nah, hes just gonna download some ram

Moltraze 1 Build 7 points 37 months ago

Good choices of parts but the name must be changed, to many generic Beasts or Legends or something stupid like that

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 3 points 37 months ago

Yeah I'm still trying to think of a new name

Moltraze 1 Build 1 point 37 months ago

Okay good, you gave me a heart attack with this name >.>

SparkyOnPC 3 points 37 months ago

Can you do a benchmark on a game for me? (it's free) :D

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 3 points 37 months ago

Once it's fully built I will be happy to. What game?

SparkyOnPC 1 point 37 months ago

Thank you, the game is called "War Thunder" you can get it on their website, or get it off steam. it's a WWII based game. when you test it, can you do everything maxed out including the sliders w/out vsync, and then do it with vsync? :D

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 4 points 37 months ago

Sure thing :D I'll proabbly wait to do the benchmark until after i finish getting all my parts and the watercooling loop is up and running though :)

SparkyOnPC 1 point 37 months ago

Alright, sounds good, thank you!

brodosaur 1 Build 1 point 29 months ago

This thing will destroy WT. On Movie with my build, I get a constant 90-120 fps

alex591 3 points 37 months ago

ram blocks. You are crazy.

thekasafist 1 Build 2 points 37 months ago

You should get 3 Asus Gsync monitors since the 980 has triple display ports. It's is specifically designed for it. Otherwise very nice build cant wait to see some pics when it's complete!

skrillazoe 1 Build 2 points 37 months ago

Damn thats a Down payment on a new ride

pnged 2 points 29 months ago

How are you supposed to say "PC>console" when you spent over $5,000 on a PC?

I'm a PC enthusiast but c'mon man...

were1708 1 point 21 months ago

yup

Sed8Op8 3 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

I would assume the monitor is just to get the build set up or until he can figure out realistically how many pixels it can push considering the amount of cheddar this guy just dropped !! I love the new 980s they seem to destroy everything except the 290x on 4K !!! Hopefully it's just a driver issue !!! Considering how much they are relying on the compression or whatever devil magic that allows it to kick so much *** with a 256 bus and a lot fewer Cuba cores!!

Sed8Op8 3 Builds 9 points 37 months ago

Gotta love those Cuba cores castro's design Lolz meant CUDA

vikingXcore 4 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

So far looks freaking sexy. Should've waited til your build was complete, but I probably would've done the same thing just because of having those cards then and there haha.

EDIT: 1200W seems a bit excessive too. unless you had the psu on hand. I think less than 1000W would've sufficed. Like 850W

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

I will in the future be hopefully adding a third, and possibly fourth card. Also overclocking them all beyond belief.

vikingXcore 4 Builds 2 points 37 months ago

So you can power all 4k monitors in the world?! haha

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Exactly haha, also i bought the power supply before I found out how much power the graphics cards used haha, so i have extra power and think a 3rd and 4th card will help to make up the difference haha

vikingXcore 4 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Ha definitely you should be good then

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Yeah also I don't even see the EVGA superclcked 980 on here yet so i just gotta use the stock 980 in the parts until it is :p

CorgiBones 1 point 37 months ago

Don't quad SLI, it looks cool, yes, however, Quad-SLI and even Triple-SLI has rather high diminishing returns. Meaning a third and a fourth GPU will give you much less performance increases. Basically, adding a second GPU will give you 50% to 60% increase in performance, while a third will only give you around 10% to 15% increase on top of that, and a fourth will give you around 5% to 10%. So unless you're doing absolutely insane graphics rendering or cuda application, it's very much not worth it. Unless of course, you want the largest e-peen in all the land!

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 2 points 37 months ago

I will have the biggest e-peen in all the land! lmfao

LeOrange 1 point 37 months ago

You're going to watercool your RAM?

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Yup

LeOrange 1 point 37 months ago

Wow :o looking for the best performance?

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Yup. Also a kit of ddr4 4x8gb 2133mhz G.Skill is only about $300 dollars, and either way my ram will be watercooled. So I can save money to use on other parts by getting ram with a lower stock speed, and then just overclocking it. Also I can have 32gb instead of only 16gb which is close to $500 for ddr4 3000mhz last time i checked. So I figured it would make more sense for the cheaper ram with more memory, and just overclocking it.

LeOrange 2 points 37 months ago

I see where you're coming from, but I don't think it's necessary to watercool your RAM. They don't give off that much heat; I mean, consider how tiny their headspreaders are. Not only that, but DDR4 produces less heat than DDR3 because DDR4 runs at 1.2V and DDR3 runs at 1.5V. But what am I to say, you're obviously looking for performance with a 5960X and 2 980s. How many loops will you have?

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

I will probably only have one loop :/. But it has two monster 480mm 80mm thick radiators in it, each with 4 corsair sp120 high performance fans, and on one of the radiators i could be doing a push pull loop possibly.

swimllamaswim 1 Build 1 point 33 months ago

only about $300 dollars

Holy **** that's more than my ******* CPU

Newbie1998 3 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Where did you get the money for this? Awesome updated parts!

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

My grandfather decided to pay for it, why he did, I honestly have no idea, I was in complete shock when he said he would. It's also for college.

Newbie1998 3 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Nice haha your one lucky guy! Can't wait to see this updated

skiskate10 1 Build 1 point 37 months ago

+1 for the 980.

Tell us everything. How is it?

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Its ridiculous, its crazy fast and the graphics are amazing. I'll probably run a benchmark shortly after I finish installing drivers and utilities, and then run another one after its overclocked and the loop is finished.

skiskate10 1 Build 1 point 37 months ago

******* awesome. I am going to buy two once they have DP 1.3 ports. I am so exited for all of the new VR features.

brelovix 1 point 37 months ago

GamerDeso 1 point 37 months ago

That rig is just dripping with awesomeness. It ain't even in its final form yet.

CaptainwolfieXD 1 point 37 months ago

This is awesome!! I can't wait for more pics.

Billhilly 1 point 37 months ago

Holy cow that's alot of fans! Do you need that much for this build? (I am doing a similar build in the 760t)

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Yeah each radiator will have 4 sp120 high performance fans attached to it, so it has a lot of static pressure and will help keep my computer cool, and then i have airflow fans for pulling cool air in from the front, and exhausting hot air out the back.

innedsaname 1 point 37 months ago

How do you like the performance of the 980's? Ive been thinking about getting some.

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

The cards are complete monsters. I haven't really gotten to game to much yet because I did just get a first boot last night, but I have some games installing now.

jacobs4525 1 Build 1 point 37 months ago

This thing is SCREAMING for asus ROG swift surround monitors!

theillesthaitian 2 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Nice build!! Have you ever heard of caselabs cases??? They are a bit more expensive but I think in terms of quality and for the sake of just finalizing the overkill aspect of your case it would be better than using the 900D. They are pretty functional too. Nice build again

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 2 points 37 months ago

Thanks :D! And yes I have i was actually looking at getting a MAGNUM SMA8. However I do love the case and everything about that case, and I will be honest in my opinion it is better then the 900D. However, I felt that the extra money on the case would better be spent/used by being put towards a more powerful processor or even thicker radiators, depends on how you look at the build. Thanks again :D. There is a chance in the future I could end up switching cases, I have another desktop now and I might try to sell the parts on it, then put the money from selling it back into the new computer (this one) but, odds are I will end up using it as a local server, and a stream computer.

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 2 points 37 months ago

Also the case is absolutely massive, and i barely have a place to put the 900D so I had no idea where I would have been able to put it haha.

howardpx2016 1 point 37 months ago

http://pcpartpicker.com/user/howardpx2016/saved/Y76D4D

not including the water cooling. I'll post the build in year 6789. are you going to show us pics when the loop is done? will you share your build log?

liked :D

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Nice! Yes once the loop is done I will be posting pictures of it. Right now im making the loop, but with only the cpu because currently its the only waterblock I have. Yeah im gonna start doing build log in a way in the description with like dates and what I did.

Willwhitacre 1 point 37 months ago

you spent 1103$ on water cooling? will you be water cooling the 980s when you can?

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 2 points 37 months ago

Yup, Each GTX980 block will be another $115-$130 each and I need 2, not to mention possibly the backplates which are $30 each. Also I plan on getting ram blocks, and each block is $50, and the monarch blocks is $24 each, and I need 2 of each.

Willwhitacre 1 point 37 months ago

holy **** that's is awesome sounding. & i did not know you can water cool RAM that's cool as fk!

HeyDan83 4 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Great build! +1

bigmak181 1 Build 1 point 37 months ago

So how is the 4K performance of these cards versus the R9 295x2s? Love the build, newest gen CPU, newest gen GPUs, and newest gen RAM. Gotta love dat.

Oh yeah +1 for not using Windows 8 xD

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

I haven't done 4k yet D: lol. I literally refused/refuse to put windows 8 on this computer lol.

ItzExide 1 point 37 months ago

How are the 980's doing for ya and what Benchmarks you think one will give you on BF4?

Public-No1-Enermy 1 point 37 months ago

hey there hockeyboy is the Asus ROG Front Base Dual-Bay Gaming Panel is it fully compatible with Rampage V Extreme x99 motherboard you havent't run to any problems with it I would like to know as im about to purchase this motherboard

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

I have not gotten the Gaming Panel yet because my local computer store has not gotten them in stock yet. I'm also still debating between it or not, because of asus AI Suite 3 and the asus overclocking panel.

crazylocopr 1 point 37 months ago

Seriously not getting some of the latter part choices. Peripherals seem to have been chosen poorly given the amount of cash spent, and those monitors. Oh, those monitors. Could have also gone with some better fans. Noctua has those industrial fans out now and they look amazing.

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

The monitors I already had. I could have gotten different fans, but I went with a higher static pressure because the radiator has a higher fin count. I plan on getting ROG Swift monitors in the future to replace the current ones.

RRRilind 1 point 36 months ago

Will you be posting any Unigine/3DMark benchmarks?

OneDollerPC 1 point 36 months ago

I have 2 things to say:

  1. +1 You should get the 980 water blocks once they come out

  2. Why do you need water cooling on ram?

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 36 months ago

I already have my 980 blocks :) had them pre-ordered. Also I don't need the watercooling on the ram but I opted for it so i can overclock the ram.

lemonademolotovz 1 point 36 months ago

did the 5960x come with that alien box?

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 36 months ago

you mean the one on linus tech? no it did not, i wish it did lol

lemonademolotovz 1 point 36 months ago

that's annoying

Meithen 2 Builds 1 point 36 months ago

Are you having any issues with SLI? I'm getting an error and crash every time I try to start a game or benchmark

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 36 months ago

im having no errors at all with sli

Meithen 2 Builds 1 point 36 months ago

I think it might be a driver issue because I deleted the newest driver and downloaded the one that came out before it and I can at least load into games but I'm still getting a screen flickering.

I don't know though, maybe not since you aren't having any issues

AmplifiedLlama 1 point 35 months ago

2 980s with an "up to" 75hz refresh rate monitor?

torrin1234 1 Build 0 points 37 months ago

I don't particularly like the whole naming a computer a "master race" as it's kind of like implying Hitler had the right idea. But yeah, this build is going to be the bomb.com and really cool to see 980s in builds. Plus one

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Yeah I was going for the whole idea that pc is better then console, I changed the name of it again.

meikyoushisui 1 point 33 months ago

Well, certainly when you spend 6K on it. :P

srs922 1 Build 0 points 37 months ago

Ton of nice parts but -1 for it not being finished

bwsmith45 0 points 37 months ago

I don't know what you're using this build for but if it's for games or other applications that don't use many threads then your CPU is money wasted. The new DDR4 memory will seriously set you back some more bucks too and, again, you won't even notice the difference for gaming. A big yes for the 980's in SLI though. Bit of a shame that all that hi-res capacity is being wasted on on standard 1920x1080 monitors though. You're missing the whole 4K experience - should have gotten a single, but big, 4K instead. Also a single 256 SSD - for a build this expensive you should be looking at a 512 SSD (minimum) just to load your programs on to. If you had spent your cash on a good Z97 mobo with DDR3 memory instead you would have had all that extra money available to take advantage of your GTX980's high res capacity by getting a 3840x2160 or at least 2560x1440 monitor not to mention the SSD capacity you are lacking. Watercooling - except for maybe a Corsair H100i you simply don't need it. Water jackets and custom cooling just a dumb waste of money for this particular mobo/CPU/GPU - read your power specs. You should have spent your $$$ more wisely.

RRRilind 0 points 37 months ago

Great build, overall great part selection. Tbh with u tho I think this is overkill, not because of the price but just the 5960X with SLI 980. I saw a build with similar usage with an SLI 760 and a 4770k or some other i7 processor. but again great part selection, nice wiring, very clean and sleek. +1

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Not even gonna deny it, it's complete overkill haha. I will be uploading the finished pictures soon along with a picture of the back with the cable mangement :P. Thank you :D

RRRilind 1 point 37 months ago

you should get some red LEDs, or if you have some time try and paint some parts red, it would go great with the watercooling.

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

Yeah im looking at some red LED's.

RRRilind 1 point 37 months ago

get red wiring also ;_; omfg this build will be godlike

hockeyboy1002 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 37 months ago

idk about the wiring, i might get custom sleeved extensions, im not sure. The machine is all put together and pretty much done i just gotta upload the pictures. Well it is all done and put together, except im waiting on the video card blocks and ram and ram blocks :p but then it will be all done. By the end of the night ill have the rest of the pictures uploaded.

I was considering doing a RAID 0 on two 256gb Samsung 850 pro, but I would loose trim on the ssd if I did so they would fill faster, which caused me a dilemma so I decided to go with one.
