I built this PC because my old desktop with a Core2 Duo had its HDD and PSU die within an hour of each other, and replacing both wasn't worth it (compared to a new PC).

Some insight on why I chose a few of the parts:

  • the CPU is great for non-demanding PC's and has an adequate cooler
  • the MB seemed reliable and was under $80
  • I was going to get 8GB DDR4-3000 but the 16GB kit I chose was on sale the day I bought the parts for $15 (I think?) more, so I chose it instead.
  • the SSD was cheaper then other fast NVMe SSD's and SATA SSD's with cache
  • the case was the only one I liked under $60

The APU OC's well at low voltage, the CPU is stable at 3.85Ghz @1.275V and the GPU is stable at 1.2Ghz @1.1V (1.075V seemed fine but crashed after an hour of load) (or 1.26Ghz @1.125V). The RAM runs well at its XMP profile (no errors).

Benchmark (with the GPU at 1.26Ghz) is here:

I had a problem with the PC not outputting the correct resolution over HDMI (it had 720p but not 1366x768), but I used a VGA cable instead and it was fine. I tried to set the custom resolution in Radeon Settings but it would only set 1368x768 (not 1366x768) and was zoomed in on the TV.

Part Reviews

Really fast and overclocks well! It's worth buying for a home or even a light gaming PC.

Runs solid with a 2200G and has a great amount of ports/headers.

My only complaint is that the I/O shield is garbage. While it's stainless steel, it's unpainted (which may clash with some black builds) and trying to fit the MB into it was the hardest part of the build. The HDMI port will also not output at 1366x768 (which I need for my TV) but I blame Windows for that, not this.

Runs at advertised speed and looks good in the PC.

This thing is FAST! I'm used to 5400RPM HDD's (which take 5-30 seconds to load a program) and this will load everything in under one second. I also don't get any problems related to slow storage (such as Windows Explorer crashing on right click).

I ran CrystalDiskMark and the sequential speeds are 3096 MB/s read/1044 write (and the 4K speeds are 748 read/1036 write for Q32T16 and 48 read/144 write for Q1T1).

Looks great and all the front I/O works (my old PC's audio jacks didn't work). The fans aren't too loud (my Wraith Stealth is much noisier ): and provide good airflow. My problems were:

  1. The standoff holes were slightly incorrectly tapped, so I could only screw some screws in halfway without stripping them (the MB is still secured in though)
  2. CPU/fan cables do not fit through the top, so I had to route them though the side cutout and around the MB.

Power Supply

My last Seasonic PSU lasted 14 years before dying (and this one was the cheapest 80+ gold modular PSU from a reliable brand) so I decided to go with them again. I'm glad I did, because this PSU is great! The fan is super quiet (I don't hear it over the other fans), the voltages are very tight (11.9V for 12V, 4.987V for 5V, and 3.3-3.35V for 3.3V - a 1.5% difference at most), and semi modular is nice to have (I only needed one SATA power connector besides the non-removable cables).

It also includes 8 zip ties, 3 velcro straps, screws, and 2 bags (even thought the picture only shows 1) as accessories. The large zip tie holding the cables in the box is reusable, so make sure not to cut it.

Optical Drive

It works, it's quiet, it matches the case and there's not much else to say about it. Only thing I don't like is that it's loud at POST.

Operating System

It's Windows.

It's somewhat fast, very cheap, and worked for installing Windows. It feels cheap but that was expected.

This is a perfect example of how to build a budget pc while having decently well performing parts. Good job!

Not too far off one I did for one of my adult kids! so naturally I think it's a great list. When you get tired of listening to the Stealth fan, stick a cheap CPU cooler on it and it gets even better.
