Description

Wife and kid were rocking the AMD A6-7400 i had acquired to toy around with. The wife does YouTube and Facebook, nothing demanding. The kid wanted to start getting into light gaming, Minecraft, GTA 4 and i got her Skyrim for Christmas and setup a Steam account for her. Of course the APU couldnt handle the gaming but did fine for internet use, so i threw together some extra parts i had lying around, snagged the 860k and gave them my R9 280 when i upgraded.

860k - Excellent budget quad core for medium gaming, saw it on sale around the holidays and couldnt say no.

Hyper 212 - Barely fit in the case, was actually flagged as not able to fit in this case but it did, another mm or two and it wouldnt have, had it lying around so figured why not.

MB - This MB has been in a couple small builds ive done and knew it was reliable, shes had this same motherboard with her APU and it does fine, can handle small overclocks and the UEFI is nice.

RAM - Had the faster ram for the APU and was going to do the A10-7850k but ended up selling the 7850k to a friends wife for her WoW build, so faster ram for no other reason.

HDD - I hate this HDD, i have a strong disdain for Seagate and dont feel like going through the hassle of swapping over Windows to a better drive or SSD, plus the wife and daughter dont complain so whatever man, dont buy this, slow as molasses.

GPU - Love AMD, best bang for the buck. Plays Skyrim, Minecraft, GTA 4 and everything else ive thrown at it without breaking a sweat.

Case - Leftover from a previous build i did for a guy, he liked it but couldnt come up with the cash so i broke it down and parted it out. its ok, nothing to write home about.

PSU - Leftover from a previous build, needed something ASAP and Best buy had it in stock for me to go pick up, no complaints other than its not modular.

Part Reviews

CPU

A competent quad core CPU suitable for budget gaming

CPU Cooler

Does its job and does it damned well

Motherboard

No issues so far, UEFI is nice, suitable for small overclocks

Video Card

Best bang for the buck, love it

Case

The side bevel is nice for cable management

Power Supply

Hasn't caught fire yet, wish it were modular, Best Buy stocked locally so i mean there's a plus

+1 For helping me. My friend says that Seagate is the best HDD brand. How ever, I say that western digital is better. WD Caviar blue drives are quite good actually, they are quiet and also have a smooth design. I bought a Seagate and it just look like a Generic Drive from a 2001 PC. Also it changes prices so freaking often! Changed from 40 dollars to 100 dollars :0. I recommend you getting a Caviar Blue.

C4C 2 Builds 1 point 32 months ago

WD is the better brand, but for some reason I always find Seagate drives to be great when in an external setup. I took my 3TB external and use it in my build but I'm going 500GB SSD and 3TB WD when I upgrade just for stability! I mean, both my seagate drives are at least 5 years old!

AkitoFTWgaming_YT 3 points 33 months ago

Casual Minecraft Player! You heathen! use that PC for some Hardware benchmarks and REAL gaming!

bradenfontaine submitter 12 Builds 2 points 33 months ago

Shiiit, it's for the wife and kid, plus the other hardware isn't top notch IMO. Perhaps I'll make another one as a toy with better internals.

AkitoFTWgaming_YT 4 points 33 months ago

Inform me when you do m9 I would love to MLG 420 blaze it with you one day while we eat Doritos & drink Mountain Dew :3

MarshmellowMan2 1 Build 5 points 20 months ago

mtgfactor9 2 points 33 months ago

heads up on the HDD if it hisss loudly and I mean louder then your fans this means its about to die

bradenfontaine submitter 12 Builds 4 points 33 months ago

And when it does im going to go all Office Space on its ***, might even use it as target practice. I've got her backing everything up to the NAS.

eeem1214 1 Build -5 points 33 months ago

f you can get it under 200$ try saving up for a 960 with 4Gb

dsargent7 1 Build 2 points 33 months ago

I've got a Seagate external drive going bad too. I'm hearing more bad things about them than anything lately.

bradenfontaine submitter 12 Builds 1 point 33 months ago

WD all the way man.

dsargent7 1 Build 1 point 33 months ago

And I keep hearing nothing but good from them. Can you tell me what the differences are between the blue, green, black, etc..? I've never been able to discern that myself.

bradenfontaine submitter 12 Builds 1 point 33 months ago

I think it has to do with the RPM and cache iirc.

CustomCrafted1 1 Build 1 point 33 months ago

Fire* :D

dsargent7 1 Build 1 point 33 months ago

Ahh yes. Their website says the green rpm is Intellipower, which, from what I've heard, runs equal to a 5400rpm drive. And the black series just has higher capacity options all with 64mb cache, as opposed to the varying smaller blue options.

Xrunner98 2 points 33 months ago

I have the Seagate Barracuda and it's working great. You probably just got a bad product.

bradenfontaine submitter 12 Builds 1 point 33 months ago

You're probably right

RBambrook 1 Build 2 points 32 months ago

That R9 280 won't even break a sweat on anything other that Skyrim that you've mentioned! Good build though.

At the moment my build is the same though, 7 or 8 year old games run excellently on new hardware! Who'd have thought :-)

cacosta16 2 points 31 months ago

I just bought the gigabyte version of the 280 and I'm scared the 860k will bottleneck it. it's currently overclocked right now at 4.2 will that be enough? or should i try to overclock it a bit more?

bradenfontaine submitter 12 Builds 1 point 31 months ago

no man you should be solid!

ocburger26 2 points 11 months ago

this is a very nice build good job! :)

bradenfontaine submitter 12 Builds 1 point 11 months ago

thank you

jjammin 2 points 7 months ago

Not bad. A bit beefy for being a computer dedicated to Facebook and browsing though, but still not bad.

coolguy562 2 Builds 1 point 33 months ago

Maybe you got a bad drive. I have the exact same one and it works perfectly for me, I boot up in about 15-20 seconds which includes a bunch of programs that startup alongside the OS. I know this is nothing compared to an SSD and I don't know who would compare an hdd to an ssd but it's one of the fastest hard drives I've used. If your looking for something faster get a WD Black. It is also silent which leads me to believe yours is faulty since you mentioned it was loud.

bradenfontaine submitter 12 Builds 1 point 33 months ago

You're probably right, never had good luck with Seagate, everything is backed up.

coolguy562 2 Builds 2 points 33 months ago

That's good, the backing up part.

welshdiesel 1 Build 1 point 33 months ago

Did you get this thing higher than 4.2 ghz or still having probs with vdrop?

bradenfontaine submitter 12 Builds 1 point 33 months ago

Still having problems with the vdroop, not sure if it's bad lottery or bad mouthparts, but won't risk it with their build. Will wait for the 870k and make a ticketing machine ;)

Kiing_Hiipo 4 points 31 months ago

I got a wicked case of vdroop from this girl I met online who had bad mouthparts. Went to the urgent care, they gave me an ointment. and it cleared that vdroop right up.

10/10 would okcupid again

Lex001 3 points 31 months ago

Do you know when the 870k will be released?

bradenfontaine submitter 12 Builds 2 points 31 months ago

Nope

C4C 2 Builds 1 point 32 months ago

I couldn't get mine past 4.2GHz as my mobo doesn't allow and Overdrive keeps crashing.. If you find something let me know :(

bradenfontaine submitter 12 Builds 2 points 32 months ago

funny you mention that, i cant get my FX-6300, 8320E, or 860k above 4.2Ghz STABLE... thinking it's my choice of motherboards.

C4C 2 Builds 2 points 31 months ago

Getting it past 4.2GHz is a bit of a hurdle... I couldn't do it on the mobo or Catalyst Control Center.

As soon as I tried AMD OverDrive (meant for the FX series), I was able to adjust voltage, and get it up to 4.3GHz.

I'm getting a Hyper 212 Evo to keep and cool and then I'll continue on the route to 4.5GHz..

bradenfontaine submitter 12 Builds 1 point 31 months ago

good luck brother

CustomCrafted1 1 Build 1 point 33 months ago

Hai, I tried to make my own version of your build and I keep getting the compatibility issue: 'Some AMD A88X chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Kaveri CPUs.'

I kept the CPU & the Mobo, did you need to update the BIOS?

bradenfontaine submitter 12 Builds 1 point 33 months ago

I always update the bios and seeing as it had the A10-6800k in it previously I had no issues, whether it will work with the shipped bios is unclear, I would think so though.

CustomCrafted1 1 Build 1 point 33 months ago

Okay, if you don't mind, could you tell me how to update the BIOS properly?

CustomCrafted1 1 Build 1 point 33 months ago

Thx

AkitoFTWgaming_YT 1 point 33 months ago

Dont worry about that m9...the motherboard sold to you is supposedly new and you can update the BIOS through downloading the files in the manufacturer's website :D

CustomCrafted1 1 Build 1 point 33 months ago

Thx bro :)

AkitoFTWgaming_YT 1 point 33 months ago

No Problem M9 always happy to help a fellow MLG quickscoper out :D

MLG!

CustomCrafted1 1 Build 1 point 33 months ago

Eh, how much FPS do you get on minecraft? (I'm thinking of making a similar rig to this)

bradenfontaine submitter 12 Builds 1 point 33 months ago

Can't say for certain, I haven't ran FRAPS while she has been playing, but the presets are maxed out and it looks pretty smooth.

CustomCrafted1 1 Build 1 point 33 months ago

Okay good, that reassuring :)

AkitoFTWgaming_YT 1 point 33 months ago

no..the question should be can it run minesweeper on 1 Billion FPS...then I would call this rig "BEAST"

LukeTheSkyGamer 1 point 33 months ago

minecraft, whoa, hardcore gaming

bradenfontaine submitter 12 Builds 2 points 33 months ago

She prefers GTA 4, but Minecraft is a nice relaxation game

cacosta16 1 point 33 months ago

i have the same the same cpu and thinking of getting the 280 but i was looking around online and people have been saying that it will bottleneck the gpu. should i go for a 270x instead or try the 280 while maxing out my oc

bradenfontaine submitter 12 Builds 1 point 33 months ago

There will always be a bottleneck in a system, whether its the GPU, CPU, Hard Drive or PSU. i say get the best you can afford. i do recommend watching this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAgpvWc4VBM

chuycookie123 1 point 31 months ago

Is a Sapphire Radeon 270x 2GB worth it? Or should I go with a 4GB?

bradenfontaine submitter 12 Builds 2 points 31 months ago

at the rate of graphical limits being pushed, id say go for a 4 gig card

chuycookie123 1 point 31 months ago

man gta 4 is not light gaming the game is seriously unoptimized and i get 45fps max with my gtx 780ti with core i5 4670k overcoled to 4.4ghz

bradenfontaine submitter 12 Builds 1 point 33 months ago

she plays at 60 fps no issues, tweak your settings if you're not getting the performance you want on your setup. And it is light gaming for her my friend.

gamingpcs -4 points 33 months ago

parts dont match up the 860k will get bottlenecked are you doing gaming the way i see it no you could of went with core i5 without gpu and have faster facebook performance

bradenfontaine submitter 12 Builds 2 points 33 months ago

im not seeing what you're saying, why would i have spent more money for an i5? the 860k is a fine quad core cpu for under $100 for gaming and facebook, quit drinking the cool-aid.

gamingpcs -3 points 33 months ago

because you can upgrade to a gtx 980 with no bottlenecks see the 860k will limit you in the future and you cant upgrade to the best cpu's like the 4790k paired with 980sli and have 4k gaming

bradenfontaine submitter 12 Builds 3 points 33 months ago

remember my friend, this is not a gaming PC...

gamingpcs -4 points 33 months ago

what are you talking about?

jjammin 1 point 7 months ago

he's saying its for facebook and youtube(as said in the title). are you that hard headed?
