Description

This is an upgrade to my old build. I was happy with my previous build but since VR will be upon us soon, I figured this is a good time for an upgrade. The old system had a couple of small problems that needed to be fixed anyway, no disc drive, a dying h100, and weak graphic performance incapable of VR.

I had originally bought a Swiftech h240x as a replacement, but the pump was DOA. I considered buying another but when I saw the Thermaltake 3.0 Ultimate on sale I bought it instead. The reviews for it were for the most part great, the only problem seemed to be the cpu mounting system. I initially doubted the reviews but the installation was actually a pain(who knew people on the internet could be right? Crazy). I've installed at least a dozen coolers, and this was genuinely the worst. The back bracket only stays in place with electrical tape, and the cpu block was like putting together megablocks. Though I must say the performance of this cooler is spectacular. The max temps I get running intel burn test on very hard are about 67 Celsius. Thats about 10-15 Celsius better than my old h100.

For the past few months ive been trying to find a bluray drive that wasn't stupidly expensive. I got lucky and found a LG bluray reader for about 25 dollars. Overall its been pretty useful and to be honest its not that bad looking in the case either.

While upgrading my system I must admit I got bored with the old case fans and decided they needed to go. I wanted fans that were both silent and didn't have LED lights. I decided on buying three 120mm and 3 140mm Cougar fans. These are the first fans Ive bought that I consider to be "high end". These fans actually look, feel, sound, and work like a quality fan should.

Finally for the big upgrade, the 670 had served me well for a year but it just wasnt as powerful as I need anymore. I found this Gigabyte G1 970 on eBay for just shy of 250 dollars shipped, and knew this would be perfect. This card is truely a beast when it comes to games. I cant actually think of a game that Ive ran that I cant max out.

I cleared out the case and set all the parts to the side. Afterwards I cleaned out the case and parts as much as I could. I then installed the new fans (I love how orange they are). I then began re-cabling the case. At first I took alot of pictures of the wiring progress but It started getting tedious and I focused on getting done. Overall Im pretty happy with the way the cabling came out and the case itself looks pretty dang good with the fans accenting it.

Im pretty happy with this build. It runs near silent, stays frosty, and performs well.

OC: I have my proccesor running at a steady 4.3 ghz right now, and with this cooler it never gets over 50 Celsius(excluding stress tests). Ive also got my gpu running around 1.3ghz around 60 Celsius. I could definitily overclock more and get better performance from them both, but for now im happy.

NOTE: I added 2 runs of intel burn test on very hard, the first with max fans/pump, and the second with minimum fans/pump. I stopped the max fan/pump run about midway through because the pump was clicking. I also added a run of firestrike extreme.

Part Reviews

CPU

I love this proccesor, its fast enough for all my needs and is very easy to overclock. I got mine clocked at 4.3 ghz without much fiddling. More than powerful enough for most people.

CPU Cooler

This is an excellent water cooling setup. It runs super cold and is relatively quiet. Do keep in my the assembly and putting together is tedious and time consuming but well worth it. Though i would not suggest this to someone who has little experience mounting water cooling equipment.

Motherboard

Its basically a z77 without a few features. The value is about as good as you can get.

Storage

Very reliable and fast. I would buy another in a heart beat.

Storage

I bought this after my previous Western Digital drive died. Im hoping this one actually lasts. Having said that performance is good and i have yet to see any reliability issues from THIS drive.

Video Card

If you want a good card to get ready for VR this is your card. It runs extremely cool, provides excellent fps, and is pretty well put together.

Case

I love this big case. It has a large space behind the motherboard tray that allows you to hide most wires and allows for a pretty good overall case look. It also has removable filters for both the intake and the psu, which is a nice added feature.

Power Supply

One of the cheapest fully modular power supplies you can buy today. Works very well and have had no problems since install. Looks and feels like an expensive power supply.

Sound Card

Great sound card for those needing basic needs. It has a built in audio amp but Ive never used it so i cant attest to how good it is. The drivers are somewhat unstable though.

Case Fan

These fans are among the quietest fans Ive ever used. They push loads of air, and best of all, are orange!

Monitor

I got these monitors for what feels like a steal. The IPS screens in these are very clear and I dont notice any ghosting at all. They do not however have vesa mounts, and had to purchase an adapter second hand.

Speakers

I got these speakers about 2 or so years ago and they still provide a lot of bang for the buck. Amazing sound and clarity. Their age has began to show though, because now in complete silence i can hear a slight speaker burble from the sub at times.

That motherboard is so skinny lol. Its like some took micro atx and smashed it sideways so it was longer.

You know Ive never noticed how skinny it was. Still though works like a champ so I wont complain.

Yea there's certainly nothing wrong with it being skinny.

It looks nice. You have a lot of good pictures too. People always forget to take enough pictures.

Thanks, I think most people get too excited for the build and forget pictures lol. I know I have.
