Description

This computer was built for Android programming with Android Studio.

I chose the Corsair Air 540 case for easier installation. You can forget cable management. Cables are hidden behind the motherboard with the PSU, Optical drives, and SDD; allowing more air flow over components generating heat. I may eventually manage the cables with some clamps, but I doubt it. The next model, Corsair Air 740, has two more fan slots at the bottom where the HDD are located in this case and a swinging "glass" side panel with latch (no more fastener pins to unscrew). I would have chosen the 740 over this 540 if I had seen it pre purchase. I removed all panels and filter for unhindered access to the case. Made sure nothing obstructs motherboard placement; drive bays, fan filter, etc. Also took a picture of everything before each component installation. I always wear an electro-static discharge strap.

I was going to try the Ryzen 7 2700, but the TDP is the same as the Ryzen 5 2600. Two more cores didn't seem a big deal for an extra $100. Also, the stock clock speed and single thread rating is slightly higher on the Ryzen 5.

Buyer beware: Cooler Master 212 Black Edition is made with fragile plastic. I stripped a screw brace attaching the heatsink bracket to the motherboard. This forced me to hold the bracket behind the motherboard with a crescent wrench while I elevated the motherboard on 2 pegs of wood to secure the heatsink. In my opinion, this heatsink bracket needs serious revision. It should attach to the backside of the motherboard like the stock fan coolers so you can focus on attaching the heatsink without displacing the thermal compound.

I like the Asus Prime X470 Pro motherboard. Has two NVMe M.2 slots with PCIe interface and a M.2 heatsink. A frame molded with metal for stronger PCIe slots to support heavyweight GPUs; eliminating the need for a GPU brace. I installed a brace with the GPU for personal preference, but it is good to know the motherboard can handle a heavy GPU. The BIOS menu is clean with mouse integration and a 'favorites' option. Auto tuning features for case fans, CPU fan, Watercooler fans, and RAM/CPU overclocking. It has four PWM case fan connectors, two water cooling connectors, and two CPU fan connectors for a push/pull air-cooled configuration. I attached the stand-offs, included with the case, to the motherboard. Installing the stand-offs early elevate the motherboard, preventing damage to the solder points on the opposite side. I placed the motherboard on an anti-electrostatic surface; a wooden stand.

Sapphire Radeon Pulse RX 580 8GB GDDR5 is definitely an upgrade to my RX 560 4GB. This GPU has a Graphics and Compute switch. I look forward to testing it. Encountered a minor problem due to the case shape. The computer case rear section near the I/O panel was warped. I pressed in to bend the case for GPU installation.

The WD Black 250GB NVMe PCIe M.2 has very fast boot time. Unfortunately, with so many programs being dependant on the same drive as the OS, I am slowly running out of space. When I upgrade to 1TB, the included M.2 heatsink will be very handy. I found the M.2 standoffs and screws behind a flap in the motherboard box. Heatsink plate has some type of adhesive thermal guard attached to it. Very sticky. I considered removing it, but was warned it may prevent electrical discharge.

I purchased the Corsair ML140 Pro Magnetic Levitation Cooling Fan because I like magnetism and they use magnetism to move air. An unseen force from the motion of atoms. Magnetism is awesome. Installed the fans with a 4 intake/1 exhaust configuration because of the case. The top section of the case is for a radiator, but I didn't use water cooling for the CPU. More exhaust fans up top would pull air through the unfiltered gaps of the computer case; leading to more dust collection.

140mm Magnetic Frame PC Fan Dust Filter is for the bottom HDD open spaces and the two intake fans on top the case. Some people use panty hose, but those cost the same as, if not more than, currently priced fan filters.

I didn't do any cable management. The Corsair Air 540 has an entire section for cables, optical drives, and Solid State drives behind the motherboard. It is common practice to place all cables behind the motherboard for increased airflow over the motherboard. The ATX cable, the CPU cable, the GPU cable, fan cables, all can be ran behind the motherboard and reappear near the required component.

CPU

Good CPU. Does better than the Ryzen 7 when they both are not overclocked. Enabling D.O.C.P. in BIOS overclocked it to 3.8 Ghz.

CPU Cooler

Keeps my CPU at 65c operating 3.8 Ghz full load. Definitely worth the price if you can tolerate attachment of the motherboard bracket. Made from weak plastic and the driver screw braces are not flush with the bracket.

Thermal Compound

Rated as one of the best thermal compound and is non-metallic/non-curing. Very easy to clean.

Motherboard

The BIOS menu has mouse integration with a favorites menu. Auto tuning features for case fans and RAM/CPU overclocking. Four PWM case fan connectors, two water cooling connectors, and two CPU fan connectors for push/pull air-cooling. I'm definitely buying the Intel version for my next project.

Memory

Rated 2666Mhz, but operates at 2133 Mhz until you activate the D.O.C.P. profile in BIOS menu.

Storage

Very fast boot time. I'm already seeing a decline in the drive health after a month, according to Western Digital SSD dashboard application, but that could be normal. I have little experience with NVMe M.2 drives.

Storage

I've had this drive for 6 years from a previous computer. It was the only component to make the transition to AM4.

Video Card

Definitely like the graphics/compute switch. I haven't had a chance to fully use the compute setting. I'm sure it will be good as the graphics setting. Stays cool under full load. Love the applications for Radeon.

Case

Great case except for the two openings below the HDD bays. Was forced to place filters over the open section.

Power Supply

Clean installation. Fully modular helps manage cables.

Operating System

Its an ok operating system. Not a fan of the permissions I was forced to block after installation.

Case Fan

Magnetism drives this fan. Very quiet.

Other

A must own. Most motherboards do not have system warning speakers, which leaves the builder guessing why the computer will not boot. These speakers should be standard install at the motherboard factory.

Other

A thermal sensor for inside the computer case. I chose it to monitor the inside temperatures. I doubt the temperature will increase with this current set up. In the future, after I upgrade components, the sensor will help.
