Build

The Commodore

by Kaidis86

Description

Well.... I got my wife into PC gaming, lol, so I gave her my older machine. FX8350 and 1060, and built myself something new!

Only unfortunate part about it all was the shop I ordered my components from went ahead and took the unwanted initiative to assemble my rig themselves when I never asked them to... At any rate, of course they installed everything all wonky and in no way how I wanted it to be. Especially since I'm doing custom PSU sleeving.

So for the time being It's operating just fine for me to game with but the temps are higher than I'm aiming for with the configuration I have planned.

Once it's all lit up it should be a thing of beauty, but for now since they used 2 different types of corsair LED fans, I don't have them all working as desired, and my Radiator isn't mounted in push/pull yet, but soon!

Update#1

She's all finished!(minus the custom sleeved cables still being made) Got the rad mounted the way I want it now, the right fans with the commander installed, shes ready to go to war!

Update #2

Painted several of the mounting screws for the glass panels orange and the back plates for the pcie slots I also painted orange! The next plan is to disassemble the system and drill out the rivets on the PSU shroud sp I can custom paint it. I've chosen a pirate flag style kraken/jolly roger type image to paint on being as it's the power supply so all the cables always remind me of an octopus, and its situated in the "deep dark depths" of the bottom corner of the case.

Added an updated photo with the screws painted visible! And one with the back plates also visible! I even painted inside the front lower corsair light to make it orange!

Part Reviews

CPU

Amazing CPU for a fairly reasonable cost. Often on sale, great for streaming and gaming with 6 cores and 12 threads.

CPU Cooler

Good AIO for the money. Nothing fancy. Little room for customization with rgb and colored logo plates.

Thermal Compound

Hands down best performing thermal compound i've used. Solid 7 degree difference between stock thermal paste (4W/mk) and the Arctic Silver 5 (8.9W/mk) 1 applicator is enough compound for about 3 applications.

Storage

Blazing fast speeds as a boot drive. from power on to windows login it's about 11-14 seconds. Not the fastest M.2 but for the cost difference (almost $300) I feel the performance increase in the 512gb 960 evo pro is negligible and not noticeable.

Case

Beautiful case with wall to wall tempered glass to show off the RGB and beautiful components. My 3 biggest issues (not exactly really big issues) were

A. Power supply shroud is riveted into the case, which makes things aggravating to custom paint and reinstall as a customizer.

B. Power supply shroud comes with NO COVER (even though corsair offers one that fits for $4)

C. The RGB Fan controls in the case are only conducive to the SP series RGB fans. So if you want to upgrade to more powerful RGB and better bearings, the case controls end up being non functional for controlling RGB/Speed/Mode for the fans (although still controllable through corsair link or iCue)

That's so annoying. Next time you're in there remind them how unprofessional and incompetent that is. Excited to see your personally executed build.

Do you think the temps are better with the top fans set as intakes or is it purely like that for the aesthetics?

Kaidis86 submitter 3 Builds 1 point 12 months ago

purely for aesthetics. with everything mounted as it is currently and the rad in push/pull i'm getting in the 16-30 degree range on individual cores. package temp usually idles around 28. I'm not overclocking anything yet, but once I do I suspect the fans set up the way they are will be sufficient for what i'm aiming to get out of it. Under 60 degrees at full load. (which it has no problems with currently)

Very nice! I have 4 red fans now, looks like I’ll have to add a couple more. How are you liking the Corsair keyboard? I’ve been eyeing that one up myself.

I love the keyboard, the cherry mx blue switches in it make wonderful music :P it's solid too, well built, and i like the positioning of the keys. makes it EASY to clean out.

Did you have a problem mounting the 280MM RAD at the top with the ram sticks?

Kaidis86 submitter 3 Builds 1 point 11 months ago

Radiator is not mounted at the top. Just have 2x LL140mm on the top there. I've got the 280 rad mounted in the front in push/pull with 3x LL120mm in push and 2x HD140mm in pull

You didn't got your wife to gaming you forced her to be different person to make you happy.

I think you’re making a bad assumption. Perhaps another has just ascended to the pc master race. Who wouldn’t love PC gaming. Plus it gave him a good excuse to spend money on a better one :)

She changed her personality no one is supposed to change their personality for someone else and yes i like the build.

Kaidis86 submitter 3 Builds 1 point 12 months ago

Ummm... no she didn't change her personality... she was a gamer beforehand... just converted her from ps4 to the proper platform lol.

All I said was I introduced her to PC gaming... where did you get that means I forced her to change who she was... that's a mighty stretch mate.

When I looked in the comments to tell you how awesome this is (I upvoted :D) I noticed this comment was marked as hidden. Is this a new feature or just something I didn't know about?

Thanks! Not sure exactly! I haven't set anything to hide comments, I think it just reduces scroll time for those not wanting to read comments and looking for the links below etc.
