Project Breakthrough is officially COMPLETE! A dream in the making, I originally came up with this design in May and have been slowly steam-rolling forward to a completed build. During the build the 20 series Nvidia cards and the 9900k were released, so add in a month delay of trying to snag a couple parts from Newegg before they sold out.
I work in IT, and I also run a computer building service. Earlier this year I did my first custom watercooled PC and it went really well. I want to get into doing custom builds for others, but I needed something of my own to show off my capabilities, thus Project Breakthrough was born!
I slaved away for 8 hours Sunday night doing the initial tube bends and component placement. There were a number of obstacles to overcome. It was my first time using passthrough fittings, but I really wanted that hot rod look and this motherboard gave me the perfect opportunity. There was some anxiety leading up to drilling a few holes in my perfectly good case, but it went off without a hitch! Another issue was that I had to pass the loop to the back of the case after exiting the GPU, but didn't have room for another passthrough. I ended up running the loop through the bottom grommet in what can only be described as the most difficult tube run of my life (thus far).
After getting all the tubes in place, filling the res, and padding up the paper towels at 2 AM, I ran the pump only to discover a pretty bad leak coming from the bottom VRM block fitting. It was disheartening after a long day and night of building to leave it at that, but I came back to it the next day and redid all the tubes for the passthrough fittings and they look and work much better!
It came out perfectly as I envisioned way back in May when I bought the first piece. This has been a long time coming and feels like a dream come true! Let this be a lesson, you can make your visions a reality with dedication, self-discipline, and holding on to hope.
