Description

I am a software engineer and so for most of my career I'm usually focused on PC's with portability (coding on the run) and with CPU and RAM as the heavy hitters. However, in the past I've also built a few PC's. The last one being for my father back around 2000. So I've had some familiarity with building them but have been out of the game for quite some time.

Now I have a son going on 16 and has been trying to play games (primarily via Steam) with his friends. Him and his friends are all great kids. He's been trying to play on his laptop which we bought for him to do school on for the most part. It's a very low end Dell Inspiron which of course is most definitely not built to support gaming at almost any level. He tries to play on it but it crashes even on the lowest settings. Some games will not run at all, period.

Thus, I was moved to spend a few bucks and get him a PC that would support the games he wanted to play as well as future proofing as much as reasonable to support the ability to upgrade and roll with the times as games evolve in quality and intensity. In addition, his favorite color is red and his favorite character is Iron Man. So after much research I went with the NZXT Phantom 410 Red case and decided to do some modding. He had no idea I was doing an Iron Man theme. Needless to say, when he saw the case completed he was very surprised and happy! :)

Also, thanks to all in the PCPP community that provided their opinions, expertise, and guidance. Hats off to you folks! :)

Part Reviews

CPU

I didn't plan on doing any over clocking so this CPU more than fit the bill with a gaming focused PC. It does everything I could ask for. The price point also saved some money to put towards the GPU and SSD drive.

CPU Cooler

Keeps it cool, what can I say. No complaints at all so far.

Motherboard

I heard nothing but good things about his mobo and the color scheme couldn't be better if it was tailor made. The BIOS was so easy a monkey could do it. Everything updated smoothly and there were no issues at all with installing Windows 10 on it. Great board and love the features.

Memory

What can you say...it does exactly what it's supposed to do. Easy installation and performs great.

Storage

Fast, plug & play, looks great and great price point for what it is.

Storage

Needed storage for files and other non-essentials when it comes to boot up and gaming. This one fits the bill with no complaints.

Video Card

I did a lot of research, reading in the forums, reviews, google, etc. I don't think I could have found a better GPU for the price and the performance it provides. The fact that it fit the red color scheme helped too. :)

Coupled with the 144hz monitor....getting crazy FPS readings. Thoroughly satisfied with this purchase.

Case

I didn't want any of those square boxy cases. This one has nice design with some style. Also it was perfect to go with the Iron Man theme I was shooting for. Nice airflow and ease of cable management - even for for those of use who aren't cable management experts.

Power Supply

Serving me well so far. I was concerned about going with semi-modular but no regrets. The only cable that's embedded already is the mobo power connector which you need to have anyway. The only draw back is if you wanted cables that didn't come with the PSU, you would be stuck with one big black cable along with whatever color scheme you're going for with different cables. But no complaints from me.

Wireless Network Adapter

Does the job and does it well.

Monitor

Fantastic monitor. I bounced back and fourth between this and the BenQ. After a lot of youbube reviews, reading, etc. Essentially it's 6 in one and half a dozen in the other. In other words it comes down to preference for the most part. Both are great, I went with this one.

Kudos to DAD for being epic! This is a great build for an equally great reason. I'm also a budding modder and I love the mods you did on this case. +1

Thanks! It was fun to do a skylake build. Personally, i'm not big on red either but Brycen likes red and Iron man. It looked like a good fit. I'd be more interested in a black case myself. I plan on building one for me in a near future, waiting on Pascal release to after market manufacturers first (like MSI or EVGA).

When I build me one i'll post that one too. :)

You plan on building one?

Ya, if you check my saved part list you can see what I'm hoping to do. I would like white but I found a good deal on a black case with a PSU so maybe I can paint it white.
