Description

This is the second revision of my first gaming PC initially built in 2014 with a R9 280X. After resolving to make the jump to 1440p, I knew I needed a GPU upgrade. Luckily for me the 1070 was just coming out, and hit the price/performance I wanted for 60fps.

From there it was deciding that while I was already taking my PC apart to upgrade and clean it, I might as well go all out with a brand new look. Enter the EVOLV and the Hue+.

I'm very happy with how everything turned out; a little bit of old mixed with the new to create something I'm very proud of!

Part Reviews

CPU

Though showing it's age being several generations behind, I couldn't be happier with this CPU. It's never given me trouble for 60fps on even the most CPU-intensive games.

CPU Cooler

Looks great. Easy to install. Whisper quiet. This is my first after-market cooler and I recommend it.

Motherboard

So far so good. It has made it three years.

Memory

Easy to install and looks cool. I considered getting another one of these kits, but I figure I'll wait to jump to DDR4 16GB when it's time for a whole new chipset

Storage

This SSD has treated me well so far. Though there's no getting over the defect this model was made with, Samsung did release a fix for it. After installing their patch, I'm treating the problem with an "out of side, out of mind" approach - I doubt I was really suffering too heavy a performance loss anyways.

Storage

Great value and great speeds. Does what I need it to do.

Video Card

This card is fantastic at 1440p. It runs quiet and cool and I dig the RGB customization. The only thing I can knock it for is EVGA's VRAM heating issues on these models. I've been lucky to avoid any problems, and to their credit I think they handled the recall well.

Case

This case was a dream to build in. It was pricey, but that money clearly goes into thoughtful design and quality materials.

Power Supply

Quiet and reliable. The modular cables are a dream when you're installing everything.

Operating System

Great improvement over 8.1, which I thought was fine to begin with.

Case Accessory

There's really no better alternative for customized RGB lighting in your case. The Hue+ looks great on its own, and the magnetic LED strips were easy to attach around the window. Unfortunately the CAM software required to the control the lights leaves a lot to be desired, but you can create some cool profiles with a little know-how.

Monitor

Excellent monitor with a small bezel and brilliant colors. This is my first 1440p monitor and I'm very satisfied. Definitely worth the jump when you're primarily gaming.

Keyboard

Cherry MX Brown switches. This is my second QFR-i, after sending in the first for several dead LEDs. Unfortunately this replacement suffered a single dead LED. I've read Cooler Master has fixed this issue in current models, but it's still a bummer. Great keyboard otherwise, especially if you're looking for a TKL and like classic white LEDs.

Mouse

This is a solid and responsive mouse that feels comfortable in my hand. It would've been nice to receive a braided cable for what I paid, but I am still very satisfied.

Headphones

One of the best purchases I've made. These headphones not only look great, but are extremely comfortable. The sound is excellent and improves any gaming experience.

Is "melchior" a comparative adjective in Latin? That's what it looks like to me at least.

HD 598's are amazing headphones for the price. I love the really forward mids... I have used them with the E10k before and they sound great through it! Ever gonna upgrade to the HD 600?

FabreMullet submitter 1 Build 1 point 6 months ago

Hmm I wasn't considering it. Do you own the HD 600's? How do you think they compare?

Jackson_Tyler96 3 Builds 2 points 6 months ago

Haven't owned but listened to a buddy's pair many times. One of the best neutral cans for the price. Definitely a step up from the 598's but you'll need something like the Schiit Magni 2 to drive them.

i cannot find anywhere to buy this monitor. Can you please link where you got yours from? Preferably an Aussie website or store due to warranty and stuff. Cheers

Thank you! I found getting a case with a window is a great motivator to learn internal cable management :)
